Re: Project Overkill 1968

My wife is amazing and supportive of my projects... she got me this for Christmas! If you're confused, we're still in the past... this was Christmas 2016 at this point. This is a major upgrade to the harbor freight hood I had been using for years.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

Next up was the excruciatingly tedious job of cleaning up the heads and replacing all of the stem seals. They're not fancy aluminum heads, but I really love these World Sportsman II castings. Valves are Manley 2.02/1.60s and the springs and retainers are Lunati to match the cam.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

Next up I sat the heads on. Roller rockers and pushrods are also Lunati. If the head studs earlier didn't give it away, here's the first real clue as to what I've got in store for this build....

Re: Project Overkill 1968

So the next order of business was dropping this little guy on. Then I took a trip to NPD in Charlotte to pick up a new bumper and some brackets.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

While waiting on some parts to show up from Good Vibrations and The Blower Shop, I moved back onto the rear suspension to install the watts link. This is a Thorbecke kit.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

Next I dug out this old fuel cell... It looks rough but has never had fuel in it. Seems to be the perfect size for this build. Just needs some cleaning up and mounts.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

So I was mistaken earlier when I said I installed RE8s in the rear. I forgot that I originally installed RE7s, then went back and put 8's in. Here are the RE8s. This was a few years ago, so I'm trying to recreate this build from memory.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

Still waiting on blower parts, but this showed up, so it's on to the transmission. Since this is a mild build and I'm not expecting more that 600hp, it's getting a built TH350. I'm planning a turboglide for the eventual BBC build.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

This is the turd that I started with. It came from a running car that I had, but had sat long enough for the seals to rot. A complete rebuild is needed along with a few mods for the power level.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

Seems like a solid core, so I started to put it together. Some of the pics include the mods such as machining the pistons to fit an extra disc and steel, 700R4 center support, kickdown elimination, TCI Trans-Scat kit, etc.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

And here's the final product. I know lots of people think poorly of the TH350, but this one should live quite happily behind the mild SBC.

Next I cleaned and painted the frame under the cab, then set the engine and transmission in place. I also swapped to some tubular engine stands.

Re: Project Overkill 1968

Next i had to get the hood on. I'm not sure if I'll run a hood on this truck or not, but I want to have the option. This is just a rough cut, it will have to be finished once the blower drive is installed.

It was a great real world experience. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Almost caused a divorce maybe, but luckily my wife is also very understanding.

Same here haha. I had a 3 year old and my wife was pregnant with our second at the time. There were too many limitations for us in the fab shop at school so we built it in my garage. It was definitely a trying time.

We managed to make a decent run in every event but went out early in the endurance race. I don't think we even completed a full lap. But yeah, amazing experience!
