Axle Swaps

Right now i have an 82 gmc k1500 stepside with 1/2 ton axles. found a guy on cl with a dana 60 and dana 70 that he wants 600 for but i talked him down to 450.

my question is, will these be a direct swap? or would i have to change out other stuff as well?

Re: Axle Swaps

I HATE you. j/k I spent over $1500 on my dana 60 alone. Get them before there gone!

There are a few things that will need to change. First 1/2 ton axles use 1310 ujoints and 1 ton use 1410. Second, the steering may need to be adjusted, but i don't think so. Third, brake lines in the front will be different. Fourth, your parking brake cables maybe different. The spring will be a direct bolt up. I can't think of anything else at the moment. These changes are small for what you are getting.

Re: Axle Swaps

both are dually or just the rear?
rear no problem. front- just buy new SRW hubs. For the price its still a steal!
With a dually rear with no mods or changes this is what it will look like. Personally I like it.

Re: Axle Swaps

Both the front and rear axles are dually. You would have to get SRW hubs or mod the hubs. I believe the SRW hubs ran me $350 for the pair, but normally run $500. The gearing is most likely to be either 4.10 or 4.56. If you get the numbers of the axle you can look it up.

Re: Axle Swaps

The front driveshaft does not need any mods as it is the same whether it's a 1/2 ton or 1 ton. The rear is a different story, nothing like a simple ujoint convernsion wouldn't solve. The 1 ton rear would not bolt in your year of truck because the spring perches are closer together on the 1 ton. The 1/2 and 3/4 ton's have the same spring perch spacing. If the 1 ton rear axle is going on a 67-72 GM truck, it would be a direct bolt on. That is a killer deal for the axles, i would scope them up if i could. Make sure you get the front spring u bolt plates.

Re: Axle Swaps

damn buy them !!!!!!! good deal for 450. i just bought two sets of tons and gave 550 for one set and working a trade for the other ones. if you buy the axles amke sure you grab the top plates and u bolts. if nothing else you could buy them and maybe trade for some srw axles. sometimes people on pirate will trade drw hubs for srw if your lucky. or you could just turn down the front wheel hubs to swap it to srw. either way for 450 cant beat it.

Re: Axle Swaps

i think im gonna have to buy them, too many people would be mad if i passed them up. only thing is, if its 4.56 gears. wouldnt that suck on the highway? and did dumptrucks usually come in 4.56? also im new on this forum... i don't know what srw axles or drw hubs means.

just an 18 year old kid who picked up 2 square bodies who works at a body shop and is looking to restore/build them up.

82 gmc k15 purchased for 1400
87 chevy c10 silverado purchased for 200 from an 80 year old guy who just wanted to see the truck back to its original beauty.

Re: Axle Swaps

Don't worry about what people think or say. If you think it would benefit you to get them and you can afford them, then I say get them. If not nobody with be mad at you. We are all just pissy because on the west coast dana 60s are $1000+.

Re: Axle Swaps

srw= single rear wheels drw= dual rear wheels

the u joint is not a problem. you could always get a bastard joint. 1310 to a 1350 joint if you had to. still a steal at 450 bucks.

Re: Axle Swaps

I would buy them. I got a deal on mine. Mine was already set up with SRW front. The 14bff had custom pads welded on and I can change the location of the axle a bit. Both the axles were welded locked, but the front has lock out hubs. It also came with crossover steering, ram assist and a 2wd steering bos that's already modded for the ram assist. All for 1k.

Re: Axle Swaps

Yes the ujoint will work. The one cross of the ujoint would be a 1310 which would be used on the end of your 1/2 ton driveshaft, while the other cross of the ujoint would be a 1350 and be used on the yoke of your one ton rear end.
