Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here's a few pics of the valve cover bolt grommets I replaced. I broke 2 bolts that I had to prder in....if you are following a LQ9 rebuild manual that is floating around on here be warned the pounds pressure is WAY too high for these bolts in that manual....should be around 9 lbs.

That's the Felpro part number for these grommets.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

More of getting the Dirty Dingo mounts to line up.

They worked good, I had the clamshells bolted tight to the frame brackets, but the bracket bolts were loose on the frame.

I had the Dirty Dingo mounts loose as well on the motor so I could move everything as I needed to line it up for the bolts to slide through the clamshells.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

This is what I got done yesterday...

NOTE: it is better to put on the a/c pump before you install the motor!!! You will have to remove the oem lines for it to fit between the frame when you drop the motor in but it's worth it as those lines will need to be changed anyways!

If you are kinda dumb like me and left everything off so you could get the motor to set easier to install it, you will have to cut your bottom a/c bolts down for them to fit. Front one is about 3" and the rear bolt is about 2.5" and use some blue thread lock to keep them in!

Here are a few pics of the sensor that was busted by the shop. I had to go & buy a 1 1/16" socket to fit it!

I'm going to replace all the motor & tranny sensors now just in case...

Here's some pics of the flexplate going on.

There's instructions a few posts back in one of the links on how to tighten these bolts up by clinebarker.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here's some of the tranny getting bolted up.

I'm following the threads that I posted in an earlier post for what needs to be done. Unfortuneatly I don't have the bolts for the tranny TC to the flex plate as they were never there when I bought the tranny.

Anyways, if anyone knows what size/length they are, please post a response. Thanks!

Will also have to move the cross member back...I bought a Energy Suspension tranny bushing plate a long time ago.....but it looks very wrong for this application so I'll have to return it next week or switch it for the correct one.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here are some pics of the S&P headers going in.

NOTE: the spark plugs SHOULD be installed before the headers go on or you are going to have problems getting your socket on one plug on either side that a tube is too close to the plug.

NOTE THIS TOO: the flanges MUST be bolted on before you install the headers or you will have lots of problems period.

You might also want to trim the driver's side ear of the tranny as shown if you are running a 4L80E like I am. I also trimmed the frame slightly on the driver's side too.

Found my "missing" bolts and bought a couple replacements so I got the steam line bolted up along with the plugs for the rear of the heads.

Just one last pic of the valves before they get sealed up too.

Here's my intake that I tried to clean up a bit...still not the greatest but it'll do for now.

I replaced the gaskets on each side as well and bolted it up to the small block. Don't forget the thread lock on these bolts!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

I had a small hole in the rear of my throttle body so I sealed it up with some putty-metal stuff that you mash together to get it to set.

We'll see how it holds up but it's supposed to be as hard as steel after it dries. Yes, I did sand the area arounds the hole a bit so the putty would have something to grab on to as well.

Also replaced the gasket and installed it tonight.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Ok, so I got the TC bolted up to the flex plate today.

Used ARP bolts Clinebarker recomended (thank you!) and some red thread lock.

Went around from starter-side, first finger tight, then 37 lbs, finished with 72lbs.

If my torque is incorrect, please someone let me know!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Now I'm working on the crossmember tranny support.

I looked into getting a custom one, or making one myself but I don't see anything wrong with using the stock one. I just need to line it up and drill new holes. So I thought...

The old holes are too close to the new holes so I need to weld up the old ones first. It may take a few days to do this as I have to borrow my brother's mig welder.

Here are the photos of the finished tranny support.

Lines up in the same center position as the old 700R, will need to modify the driveshaft later to fit the shorter length required.
