Re: 14 bolt semi float help please
At a minimum you'll need a new bearing and seal...the sf rears came in a variety of trucks...mine came from a 91 suburban...you'll have to pull the diff cover...remove the bolt and crosspin from the diff...then remove the c clip...then the axle will slide out....its gonna be bear to get the outer race out of the axle tube...you'll need the correct puller and possibly some heat to get it out....and the correct drivers to get the new one back in....
Hopefully the axle and tube isn't damaged... Curious?...wheres your rear brakes? What's the axle in?...I assume it's not in the truck it came in....

Re: 14 bolt semi float help please
My money is on you needing an axle shaft also. What is sticking out is the seal and it seems to have been leaking for quite a while. Pull the shaft as described and have a close look at the bearing surface on the shaft.

Re: 14 bolt semi float help please
I'd pull the axle and see how much damage there is 1st...buying a ff will cost way more than fixing the sf..if there is no tube and axle damage...bearing and seal will be a cheap fix...as long as that's all that's needed...

Re: 14 bolt semi float help please
I had a semi-float in my 84 K-20 when I got it.
It made a noise like a u-joint went I got it. Found out it was the cross-pin ( that mongocanfly spoke of in post #2) was broken. I replaced it with a full-floater I had in a parts truck that I knew was road-worthy. Either will be Ok. Depends on how much weight you haul. Sounds like $250 for that FF would be the ticket. Depending on it condition.

Re: 14 bolt semi float help please
Around here 10.5" 14 bolt FF's are pretty reasonable and plentiful. I'd replace a SF with a FF any day if the deal was good enough. I had a 14 bolt SF in a 1991 suburban and had probs with it until the day i sold it. I've had 4 different rigs with 14 bolt FF's in them and they have been bomb proof. I'm in the process of rebuilding the 14 bolt FF in my '06 Silverado now.
