Power steering not working

On a newly acquired truck that I just got running, the power steering is not working at all. No whining noise coming from the pump and it steers just like a manual. Where do I start first - pump or gear box? If it matters, it's a 1971 with 402 engine. Thanks.

Re: Power steering not working

fluid level engine off - note its level on the stick .
fire it up see if level changes .
also see if the fluid is moving around in the tank .

i would almost bet the pump died .

Re: Power steering not working

It is a factory big block truck with the remote fill canister mounted to the fender. There is fluid showing inside the canister. Should I be able to see the fluid circulating with the canister being mounted that high?

Re: Power steering not working

only if there is more than 1 hose to the remote can . otherwise its just a storage tank up there .

at that point the cheaper option is drain / replace oil and put on a pump as its cheaper than a box .

make sure to raise wheels off the ground .
do NOT start engine .
turn them lock to lock as you add fluid but turn slow as to not foam the fluid with air .
once fluid level is stable fire for 10-15 sec and shut down .
redo turn and fill until stable level .
fire up and let run and top off and turn lock to lock and keep oil level up .

doing this gets the air out and not foam the fluid to bad and kill a new pump .
