Traded for a 50 model today!

I traded a set of stock 01 chevy wheels for a 50 model pickup. It's just a body with no frame, but I'll probably build my own frame. It'll probably be a few weeks before I can go pick it up, as I have to make room for it in my storage building. This will be a future project. It'll be a few years before I can start it, as I have a current 84 swb that I'm working on. I do have a few questions though. I was told that the body came off of a 1 ton or 1 1/2. Are there any differences in a 1/2 ton body and this body? I'm going to need patch panels for the floor board, rockers, and cab corners. Are these parts made? If so, where would be the best place to purchase them? If these parts are still made, should I be worried about how much longer these parts are going to be available? I'm just worried that with fewer and fewer of these trucks around, that reproduction companys will quite producing the parts, due to lack of sales.

thanks

Oh, and it included an extra set of front fenders and another extra drivers fender. ALso, it has an extra set of doors with another extra drivers door! It also has a title, but his grandfather has to find it.

Can't really say if there's a big difference on the parts based on the difference in weight class but, patch panels are readily available.
As you read through the board, you'll find many vendors that sell the patches you'll need.
Mother Truckers, GMC Pauls, Chevy Duty, The Truck Shop, just to name a few.

I thought the body was different when you went from the 1 ton 3800 series to the 1.5 ton 4400 series. I may be wrong though. Anything after 3600 confuses me

Re: Traded for a 50 model today!

The cab and doors will be the same as a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck. The fenders and hood are different if they came from the bigger trucks. All patch panels are readily available and will be for some time, however if you are going to wait a couple of years to work on it, it will most likely be less costly to buy the parts now instead of later. Nothin ever seems to go down with these truck parts. You cab mounts may also vary from the smaller trucks but you are building your own frame so it should not be a big deal for you. Check out the Stove Bolt page and all the links there for tons of info about this series truck. I have four of em myself and have been playin with them for about 20 years. Plus I have a bunch of buddies with the same design trucks. Great find/trade it sounds like!! Have fun with it! Rick

Re: Traded for a 50 model today!

cabs are the same from 1/2ton up or all of them except the cab overs.
fenders, grills, hoods are all the same from 1/2ton to 1ton.
the larger truck grills can be used to repair the smaller truck grills, the bars are the same, the diff is the height of the grill.
large truck fenders have a HUGE wheel opening & are wider, look here also look here on the Body Dimensions pgs 61 - 67 it'll show u the widths of the trucks...joe

So theoreticly I could use a good 1 1/2 ton cab to replace a rotten 1/2 ton one

Re: Traded for a 50 model today!

Sure...the cab is the same. They may have located the actual front mount hole in a little different spot on the cab floor, but you can use the hole next to it for the half ton mount bolt. Depending on the year you use the emegency brake may not be the same as a half ton. They put e brakes on some transmissions for the bigger trucks. This is a small task to over come. Half ton fenders and hood, either GMC or Chevy will fit the cab with the respective core support units, and grill parts.
