78 350 Timing tag.
Got a 72 with a 78 motor in it and I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out the timing tag. Tried google and cannot find a version that is similar. The tag has no numbers and the only thing that looks like a possible 0 degree point is the smaller mark with the white paint on it. Anyone familiar with these and can tell me where 0 is? Also when checked with a timing light there is a white mark on the balancer that lines up. But the notch in the balance does not.
Thanks J |

Better!!
Would be nice without the blue paint. You might find some marks if it's cleaned off. Or you might need to prove #1 tdc to find where the zero should be. |

Re: 78 350 Timing tag.
So I pulled plug 1 and found TDC. A painted notch lined up with the tiny painted notch on the tag. My timing was 18 degrees btdc.

Re: 78 350 Timing tag.
Tape wrapped rod through plug hole. Felt the piston rise as I rotated the crankshaft till it peaked. Went a little further till it dropped.

Thought so!!
Did you know those uncalibrated devices can be off 20 degrees. Only method is with a piston stop. Like here. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...op_dead_center |

Re: 78 350 Timing tag.
Ok. I'll get one of the plug types. Pretty confident the mark on the balancer is correct. Any other mark would mean my timing is 0 degrees or way over 18. Using a timing light with advance function. Thanks for helping with this.

You can make a stop with an old sparkplug.

Re: 78 350 Timing tag.
How is that done? I'm assuming I need to break out the insulator to put a bolt through the base.

Yup!!
Knock the center out, thread the inside for a bolt. Or buy one. https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...0189/overview/ |

Re: 78 350 Timing tag.
Thanks again for the help. My rudimentary method got the timing back in a bit but using a piston stop showed it still 10 degrees off. Need to readjust the distributor just reduce the advance. Oh and I found the 0 mark on the tag. Boy was I way off! Appears the mark on the balancer is also off by 2 degrees.
