Oil By-Pass Plug

I may be redoing the top end on my new "professional" 355 rebuild. Don't get me started. . . I keep finding reasons to believe I got crap for parts.

Since that will be happening, I will most likely need to replace the oil pump to be on the safe side.

That brings me to the question regarding plugging the by-pass on the oil pump. Some argue that any fine metallic particles could be "passed through" the by-pass and get into the drive train bearings; so they recommend tapping and plugging the by-pass.

I don't see any issues with doing this, but want to get additional input.

Re: Oil By-Pass Plug

Oil will only by-pass when the pressure differential (Delta P) across the filter is great enough to open the bypass valve, The pressure value listed for the bypass to start opening is misleading.....The oil pressure itself is not part of the equation.

I would chose a little unfiltered oil vs NO/Resticted oil if the filter cannot handle the volume of oil demanded.

The filter adapter mounted bypass fiber plate can leak, And the spring can get weak after 50 years of use, If you block off the bypass......Run a Delco PF2232, It has a built in bypass & fits in place of a PF1218.
