Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Working on a 65 C10 project & recently installed all of the deluxe heater parts. The only issue I am struggling with is the Heat control cable. It works fine however unlike the other 2 cables it does not appear to be anchored in any way. So when I move it the shielding moves with the cable.

Can anyone tell me how the cable shielding is anchored for the Heat cable (goes to lever by heater core in engine compartment)? Pics would be most helpful as well.

Any info is much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Which end of the cable is not anchored? At the controls on the dash or by the lever on the heater box?

Stand by will send better picture tomorrow. There should be a small stub attached to the box that has a screw and clamp on it. This is about an inch away from flap rod.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Sorry, don't know enough to answer that, but if it has the damper control, I believe it should have the anchor. Perhaps it go broken off in the past and some one painted over the weld marks. I have mine our waiting for a new core.
Sorry about the sideways shots.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

If that cable clamp bracket is missing, you may have a Thrift Air heater box. Those did not have that flapper like the Deluxe heaters do.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

pulled the cover off, pic below is what I found.

Another question I have, seems that the flapper & cable work backwards. I might have this all wrong, but when the control knob is in parked position, and the cable is extended, it puts the flapper in the down position. Does that sound right?

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

You should be working on the HEAT lever Right? . Lever up, cable retracted, flapper directing air to bypass core.
PS, If your this far, if you have any concerns about your core, pull it and get it pressure tested. Mine failed shortly after replacing the bad rad cap.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Brent, r u sure about the way the cable works on a deluxe heater control? With the lever up cables r actually extended due to the way the lever swivels. When pushed down the bottom of the lever where cable attaches goes up, which pulls the cable wire through the shielding. The other 2 levers on my controller work the same way, and appear to be working correctly.

Can anyone add to this?

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Just checked again. 3 lever system (I believe this is the deluxe), heat lever, up is cable retracted, door moves to coil bypass.
Might be possible you are mixing 2 systems and your unit had a control valve on the heater hose.
Willing to talk thru a phone call if you wish, assuming someone doesn't clear it up for you soon.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Scott, looked deeper as I was reinstalling heater box. The cables on the control panel ( at least the heat), can be connected between the handle and pivot ( direct acting) or the pivot end (reverse acting). 2 are connected furthest away from handles (on pivot side) 1 is connected closest to handle. My heat is connected to the lever between handle and pivot point, so up is pulling the cable ( shortening it).
Pic 1 is closest to dash , heat cable. The black bars you see are 2 of the levers. Pic 2 is back of controller, defrost and air cables, connected to pivot side.
Removal of control panel may clear this up. Perhaps some one has a pic of the controller removed.

Hope this helps.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Same as the back of the lever , a pin and eye on the cable. On the heat, there is a pin on the handle side and a pin on the pivot side. I see on the defrost lever there is a hole on at the same location so I assume those 2 levers are the same and they riveted?? a lever on the heat to change cable directions.
Pic 1, from the bottom, nut in front is the cable clamp, heat lever on left, air with fan switch on right.
Pic 2, heat again on the left, focused on the pin and cable eye. On the right is the air and fan switch lever.
If you do not have the pin, I would bet the hole is there and a # 6 or 4 machine bolt could provide that service.
Give me a call if you wish, 250 four zero one 1762.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Brent, finally figured it out! Thanks so much for the pics & info. Got it hooked up correctly & is working as it should. Now I just need to make a bracket to anchor the other end & I will be all set.

Thanks again.

Re: Need info on deluxe heater cable issue

Good to hear, a manual choke cable kit should give you the material to build from.
