Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Here is the second half of the two truck deal I made a few weeks ago. 1972 1/2 ton Cheyenne 4x4 with original paint, rally rims, automatic trans, AC...etc. It has some rust in the rockers and inner rockers, all four cab supports are good and one cab corner is starting to show signs of rust. Bottom of doors will need some attention also. It will be 3rd in line for restoration after the GMC and the Light Blue truck are wrapped up. I am really starting to love these 4x4 as much as the 2 wheel drives.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Quick update on truck, finished the last of getting any dings or dents out of rear bed panel. Will be finally getting some paint on the bedside and the front fender. Its a long nice weekend with labor day added to the mix. Time to start getting caught up on this and move on to the next 4x4.

Also wanted to say very displeased with the seat cover I put over the old bench seat. I probably have sat in it about 5 or 6 times to move the truck in the driveway, and it is shredded like the material was rotten. Buyer beware the seller on Amazon "Seat Covers Unlimited" will not stand behind the seat covers. I guess I will be ordering a period correct cover before it goes down the road.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Finished the first of getting bedside ready for paint. Wrapped up knocking down any rock chips and areas that I did any metal work on with 220 grit wet n dry paper. Then finished off with a little "Tec" etch primer to any of the bare metal areas. Now moving on to the next phase with shooting some filler primer over the entire bedside. Knock that down with a long dura-block with wet and dry paper, wipe down with wax and grease cleaner. Finally shoot some color left over from doing the rockers and bottom of the doors.

Its not perfect by any means, however it is much better than the old bedside that was crunched and had areas that the metal actually ripped by the stake pockets. I would call it driver quality, there is probably a few small areas that are not perfect.

My intentions are to fix the items that I could fix and sell the truck. I had three items that I wanted to finish before selling, replace the seat cover again, four new 235/85r16 tires on order now and painting the bedside and front fender. Getting the painting over with this weekend will leave the other two items to do then sell it and on to the next 4x4 project.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Well finally got paint on bedside around noon. Had to wait until the temperature was around 75 degrees. The reducer I had was from 75-85 degrees and want to get it on there at the right time. Really happy to get that done and in the morning I will shoot the passenger front fender, did not want to push the temperatures this time with doing both.

Also was able to get the seat cover ordered and tall skinny tires for the truck, both should be here first part of the week. Finally seeing this project coming to and end soon. Here is what is left to do.

-install new seat cover
-mount bedside, trim and rear light
-secure bed to frame with new bolts
-paint on front passenger fender, mount trim
-tires mounted
-paint both bumpers and rims ( both are already prepped for paint)

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Got the bed off of blocks and bolted down to frame again. Got new tires 235/85R16 mounted to the rims and installed. While pulling plugs I bumped the lower heater core hose and it immediately started leaking, so since I only had a few bolts holding on the fender that needs to be painted I dropped the fender down and removed the heater box and core. Then looped the coolant back to manifold so it can still run if needed. I was surprised that it was not full of garbage, pulled the heater core out of the box and the low tube was separated from the core. After inspection I think it is possible to clean up and prep for a re-soldering job. Will give it a try after work today and test for leaks. I did this repair on another truck in the same location on the heater core and it held up well with no leaks.

Things left to do:
-install seat cover when it arrives at end of week
-paint front fender passenger side
-paint rims, front and back bumper and mount
-install trim on bed and re-mount the tailgate and rear lights on drivers side
-try to find some 12" hubcaps for GMC

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Well I was able to repair the heater core bottom tube that came lose. Cleaned it up real well with cleaner then I sanded with perforated emery cloth made for copper pipe installation. Cleaned it again, smeared on some flux paste and fired up the mapp gas and soldered it back on. Then I drove the truck down the street to the local automotive repair garage where they work on everything from brand new cars to old school hotrods. I know the owner and trust them with any of my vehicles. I had them go over the motor to see if I am missing anything or if they see anything that needs immediate attention. Always nice to have second set of eyed on it.

While the GMC is over at the local garage for a few days I decided to go over to storage lot and drag home the next project, the 69 Light Blue K10. Went over and removed the stock front bumper and bolted on my tow bumper that I use with a tow dolly I have. Pulled it home with my 67 C20 and put it in the driveway to power wash and begin to make a list of the items I will need to complete the project. Here is a picture of it after power washing.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Looks like the Brown Santa came early and delivered my seat cover for the 72 GMC that I ordered from RockAuto. So far I have been happy with all items I have ordered from them on price and shipping. Also took a little compound and rubbed on the hood of the 69 K10 to see what the paint is suppose to look like under all that oxidation. Wow this is exciting to see.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Finally got the seat installed this weekend. After removing all of the hog rings off of old seat and removing the listing wires I proceeded with cutting out two small areas of bad foam with a electric knife. Then cut out some new foam and attached with 3m 90 spray adhesive. After all was done with the foam I sprayed both sections with a light coat of 3m 90 adhesive then covered the entire foam sections with a thin layer of felt batting. Added the new seat covers that were purchased from RockAuto and went crazy with the hog rings. Seat not only looks good but feels really nice to sit on.

After seat went in I pulled the steering wheel to see why the horn was not working and to see if the upper bearing was bad do to a little slop in the steering. Found out the bearing needs to be replaced and the horn is fine, just had so much dirt and crud in there it was stopping it from making contact. Ordered a new bearing from Classic Parts along with a few trim plastic inserts for upper and lower trim attachment.

Spent the rest of the day banging out a few dings in the upper and lower trim for bedside and front fender. Then pulled string lines to do placement and tape on molding so I can mark reference points.

Sorry I am missing a few images in between the foam and seat finished, had an issue with cell phone memory. Fixed that issue this morning.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Here are a few picts of getting the trim lined up for placement and one of the the new carburetor from Summit, distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs install. Found out the distributor had an Mallory Unilite electronic ignition installed....that's a plus!

Need to get the repaired heater core install this evening and while I have the fender dropped I will finally get some paint on it. Ordered some new trim clips for the upper and lower side for both the bedside and the front fender. Found a pair of good rear light trim bezels for back of bed that were missing. The repaired bedside will need holes drilled to accept the trim.

Also bought a set of 12" hubcaps and they will not fit, so I guess i will be looking for another set of GMC 4x4 12" caps. The front ones I could make the hole larger to fit over the hubs, the rears are not deep enough to fit of axle sticking out.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Plan for the day was to remove inner fender and fender on the passenger side. I only had it held on by about 6 bolts total for the both so it only took a few minutes to have them both off. removing them was to serve two purposes, one to get the fender finished off and ready to paint while it was off and the second was to reinstall the heater core and heater assembly. Much easier to do both when the fender is off.

About 30 minutes later and the heater core and heater assembly were back on and ready to go, while I was doing that I got side tracked and removed all the blue tape I had put on the spark plug wires to number them and also clean all off the baked on grease that were on the valve covers. It was a much easier task with the fender and heater assembly not in the way. With that completed I moved on to the fender.

I had worked on the fender before and thought I had it really close, however after looking at it a little better under better lighting I discovered a few areas that still warranted attention before shooting color. One area was to weld shut all 6 holes from the previous badges that were on fender. None of them were reusable for the GMC 2500 Custom badge. So I welded them up, grind a little then a skim coat of Rage filler. I also went over a few other areas on the fender and did a complete over all sanding and prepping for the filler primmer. Will tackle the inside of the fender where it is exposed under the hood tomorrow after work. With any luck it will be ready for color before the weekend.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Got the steering column bearings and turn signal springs installed so that I could get the steering wheel back on. I followed the suggestion a few people here on the forum told me about for cleaning up all the gunk. I used denatured alcohol and an acid brush to clean up all the grease/dirt mixture and used steel wool on a few other items that had a little surface rust. After it was all back together that seemed to help some of the slop I was feeling in the steering wheel.

Got the front fender sanded down one more time with the filler primer and a coat of glaze. Hoping to get a chance to shoot some color in the morning if all looks good. I am so glad that I have a heated garage which makes it possible to control the temperatures and make it possible to paint and do projects on the trucks through the winter.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

I know its taking me longer than I wished to get this fender ready for paint. Finally got the outside of the fender ready to go and had to address the inside of the fender. Sanded down all areas with 220 grit and then cleaned well with wax-n-grease remover solution. After that I sprayed some rust encapsulator on the areas that had had surface rust. After I will shoot the fender and it has had a chance to dry for about 48 hours I will then shoot the inside of fender where you don't see it under the fender well with 3m undercoating.

One thing I did not mention was how many runs there were in the original paint on the inside of the fender, actually I could see that the runs were caused during the black primer process before the blue paint. I sanded down a few and then kinda just went over the fender inside to rough up the old paint for better grip.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

This morning I cleaned up a little, stretched some painters plastic around the garage and over the truck for over spray protection. Hung the fender from the ceiling and one wire to the floor with a weight on it so the fender does not swing when spraying. Wiped down with wax and grease remover and hit a few spots with etch primer to cover any bare metal before surface primer. Mixed 8 oz of primer and shot it with an 3M Accuspray gun with a 1.8 tip. I will wait until after lunch sometime and mix up another 8 to 10 oz of single stage Copper Poly and spray the fender again with the 3M Accuspray with the 1.3 tip this time.

I will drop some pictures of the final sprayed fender later today. I will wait until later in the afternoon on Sunday to mask off and spray the back side inner with 3M undercoating.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Here is the back and front of the fender with color on it. Used the 1.3 nozzle on the Accuspray set up. Shot a nice tack coat then waited for it to flash off and then shot two more coats of paint. Should be ready to go back on after I shoot the 3M undercoating.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Got up really early this morning before work and taped of the fender for a little 3M undercoating on the inside. Gonna strip off the paper and get the badge and trim installed and mount it this evening after work.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Today was a busy day trying to get items completed on the truck. Started off with working on getting all trim mounted on the fender and bedside. Had to modify the actual plastic clips I bought from Classic Parts. There clips were to long and actually bowed a little in the middle. I tried all different ways to make it work and it just was not happening. With the bow in the plastic clip and the very thick 3M adhesive tape it made the trim stand out to far. The solution was to cut the clips in half and strip off the 3M adhesive strip and replace with a 3M
60lbs outdoor double stick tape. It was a pain in the ass but it worked.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Got the front fender mounted after putting on the trim. Installed the hood and cowl then wrapped up a few items that needed to be hooked up under the hood. Made a trip up to the corner store to get a couple of bolts missing on the front bumper, got it buttoned up and mounted the license plate. Moved on to the back and installed the lights and side markers, mounted the tailgate and a few other small items like putting in a few more bolts for fender well area and the bedside. Jacked it up and took it off the wheels skates to get it outside to see some sun.

I will be reaching out to the people here on the forum that have sent me personal messages showing interest in purchasing. Hopefully soon the truck will be off to a new home.

Re: Fix and Sale 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 K2500

Looking good. Only comment I have is when installing the trim pieces with double side tape us some silicone caulking with the double side tape to hold it long term. A truck I had some years ago the PO used double side tape and I lost couple pieces until I removed them and used caulking to hold it long term.

That's a great idea and I will do that on the next project. I was thinking who ever bought this truck if they decided to do an overall paint on the truck it would all need to be replaced to look right and the 3M double stick I used would be the way to go for easy removal. By the way I love your truck, it will be one of the nicest ones on here......you should be proud!
