Oil Pan Clearance

I'm putting a 5.7 Vortec from a 98 Chevy into my 72 Blazer 4WD. The oil pan hits the engine cross member before the motor mounts sit on the towers. The mounts are new. There's about 1/8 inch between the towers and the mounts.

Do I need to change my oil pan, or should I use spacers on the mounts?

Another question: Do the towers go on top of the frame rail or under it? I can't find any good pictures of 4WD towers, and it's been 5 years since I disassembled this.

Not sure if the 4wd is the same or not, but the stands sat on top of the rails in my 72 c10.

Re: Oil Pan Clearance

Looking at your pic, it looks like my stock vortec pan steps down further back. No fitment issues on '70 K20.

Re: Oil Pan Clearance

I ended up replacing the oil pan with a 4 quart pan (5 with filter) and it went in fine. Lesson learned - the 6 quart Vortec pan doesn't fit.

Re: Oil Pan Clearance

Just wondering did your motor come out of a 2500 4-wheel drive?

I'm actually not sure. The engine had been transplanted into a 87 Jimmy, but it was supposedly from a 98. The previous owner of the Jimmy had done a hack job of the installation but I was able to drive it home (barely).

Just wondering because if I remember right the 4-wheel drive had a bigger oil pan and they look like 3/4 ton 906 casting marks on the heads. I just looked at my heads on my truck and yours look close but a little different. The 1/2 ton 062 heads have a saw blade casting mark.

The heads are actually aftermarket cast iron Vortec heads with a heavier casting. The original heads were 906 castings but they were cracked.
