Found me a beater

Been looking for awhile well, a little over 2 years to be more exact because it had to be a beater price, NBS with no body rust, a 2wheel drive with a 5.3 and an ext cab. Scored this 99LS1500 back in July for $850.00 with a fresh rebuilt 4L60E on a pallet still wrapped in plastic from the shipper. Long story short, the truck was a Arkansas truck owned by a GI now stationed here in MD. It has over 300K on it's 2nd engine and runs perfect but the trans started slipping 30 mins after driving. So he ordered a rebuilt trans and later decides to buy a newer Chevy SS Quad Cab Pickup and sells me his 99 Silverado throwing the rebuilt tranny in the deal for free. The exterior has a few bumps and bruises with 4-5 spots of clear coat peel on the hood & roof but the interior is near perfect with the 2003 radio bucket & dash bezel upgrade. I'm a NBS fan and love to wrench so this deal was perfect for me. No big plans for mods just planning to keep her stock and add some duals but that will be after I install the rebuilt trans, with a new T.C., Trans Cooler and a few more minor parts.

Great looking truck! It looks well-taken care of from the pics. I wish my '02 was that color. Any known mechanical issues beyond the transmission? I like that you are keeping it mostly stock too.

Re: Found me a beater

Forgot to include a few pics of the rebuilt 4L60E that I still have to install. Other than that I've replaced a few small parts that were causing some very minor issues such as

Blower Fan
2 Dash Actuators (lower left and right sides under the dash)
Cabin Filters
New Blue Tooth Stereo
New front & rear speakers

Figured I might as well get that stuff done now before the cold weather sneaks in. All is working perfect now and the interior is done. Found out the P.O. also installed LED's in the gauge lighting and dome light. Looks cool for driving at night.

Re: Found me a beater

Update:::: No tranny install yet do to an electrical Gremlin of an issue causing a random no crank/no start issue. Some days it will start by key or the remote start and has no issue restarting for a few days but on day #3 and after I get a no crank /no start issue again. I replaced the 4 yr old battery with a brand new battery, checked and cleaned all wire connections, tried moving the gear selector through the gears and staring the truck from neutral, removed, reconnected and jiggled the little wiring connector above the ignition key cylinder, removed the starter and had it tested at 2 different locations. This darn thing has me puzzled.

Re: Found me a beater

aftermarket remote start?

nice score by the way.

also being that i am not a tranny guy, had a similar issue with a ford some time back, would slip on very cold days from park to go and then again in the summer on very hot days. was told that when some shops do a trans filter service the filter gasket gets cut (by accident) on install causing a cavitation effect of the fluid in the pan thru the pump causing no go / slippage issues. the solution was to slightly overfill the trans fluid so that the fluid level was above the filter gasket so if needed the pump could suck off the top. solved that issue, drove it for several years like that. hey! atf is not cheap.. lol and i am lazy, oh and i absolutely HATE ford.

and welcome to the forums!

I put a brand new battery in it so There's no need to jump the battery plus if I turn the headlights on they don't dim nor does the dash lights dim or go blank when turning the key to the start position.

Turned out to be a bad corroding negative battery connection on the engine block. Took a few headaches to find it, cleaned it up and reconnected everything and she cranked, started and is running perfect. I'll be ordering a new GM Negative Battery Cable this week just to be safe. Thanks for the help guys

BUMMER! isnt this the way it always is tho? fix it, then fix something else.

i dunno what you paid for your kit, but you could probably have gotten away with just a pump replacement. hardest part is pulling either the bed or the tank.

update us when your done.

Re: Found me a beater

Sorry, not a kit, I bought the AC Delco Pump Assembly complete with new harness connector for $130 delivered to my door and I'll be helping my childhood buddy who own & operates his own repair shop do the R/R for me.
He told me it's really not as hard as some people think and if I give him a hand tilting the bed he'll do the R/R for $200. Sure pays to have good friends.

Re: Found me a beater

UPDATE...........

New fuel pump & fuel filter installed and the truck is running great. By buddy only charged me $125.00 for the R/R and all I did was help him lower & lift the tank. Now I'm knocking on wood that nothing else takes a dump in the old girl.
