97 Tahoe Ignition Lock replacement

The black plastic that surrounds the key and gives you leverage to turn the key broke off in my hand today. When I look up this part is says that "PART REQUIRES CODING AT GM DEALERSHIP". Im almost 100% sure this key does not need coding.. I wanted to confirm with you guys on that. For instance. I have a replacement key that is just flat metal. No plastic, no chip or anything and it works fine.

Re: 97 Tahoe Ignition Lock replacement

I replaced mine on the '97. YouTube videos are extremely helpful. Check them out. I was able to get the little tumbler springs and retaining plate at the dealer. I pulled the tumblers out with some heavy-duty tweezers. It worked pretty well. I also replaced the upper and lower plastic "clam-shell" while I was at it since the top part was broken on mine.
