Here's my config. As you follow the shaft at the top of the photo it goes to the tail-end of the tranny.

Randy, that pic there shows the placement of the auto carrier bearing. The one I sent you utilized the 2 holes on the bottom front (engine side) of the crossmember. I just checked and the rivets I torched are still there. So the answer is yes the bearing needs to be bolted thru those 2 holes. I'll e-mail a pic of the holes I'm referring to.

not those holes Jeff, not that flat bracket either, im talking about the 4 bolt bracket that bolts to the crossmember and bends to haev palce for the teo big bolts to bolt the bearing to.,

i dont know what that plate that was bolted to the bearing was for, it wont fit truck anywhere, no using it, i think the driveshaft length is fine, but the carrier bearing wont bolt to truck in correct spot, its way too far back with the bracket thats meant for it from another 67-72 truck that GMC Paul had in his yard that he robbed it off of.

edited:

ok i see your pic now, damn never seen a deal like that before, thats wierd, i want to know if Paul or Wes have ever seen that like thta befor,e thats interesting as heck, nothing lik eauto set up or like normal 4 speed setup,. wow! can you post that pic of the crrier bearing in here? i cant get properties and url of pic form hotmail inbox.
Thanks

You can't use this one.

You have to use this one which is what I sent with the driveshaft.

Does this make sense or am I way off base?

Oh......well then Randy my 4spd 2pc driveshaft on my parts truck won't work either. It has the same style of bearing as my C20. I think the splines are WAY different for the removable yoke.

What truck is this for again? What type of differential?

That first pic is a 3/4 ton BB Auto dana leaf rear. The second pic is on my sons V8 swb 4 speed but is identical to what was on the 68 GMC 4 speed 307 leave dana60 rear from which you have the driveshaft.

I'm not making this up.

It looks as if you can use the carrier bearing you have if it's like the first pic and bolt it to the plate which I hope you still have and make it right.

ok woaaaaaaaaaahhhhh slow the horse buggy down, woaaaaaaah, puter crashing left and right and havig to reboot over and ove,r tryingggggggg hard as heck to reply to mail and here damn! icant keep up !!!!! ack!

ok, now, yes, i see how its supposed to mount now, first pic is bracket i have now, had no idea GM ever made a third style of brackets like the second pic you have , ok now i think i will try to mount it identical to how you showed me, the problem is actually i have too much length in rear with a 12 bolt axle even, and way not enoughh length at the 4 speed output yoke, i need to now go get that flat bracket that came with the shaft you sent me and bolt it ot cross memeber and then bolt bearing to that and pray, i tihnk that may do it, it seems like it wil if you think about the problem and how much further forward this wil move the entire shaft which is what i need done.,

just did not know such an animal was made, would liek to see if paul or wes have ever seen such a wierrd setup, normally the 4 pseed shafts used the top pic design, but guess thats auto only, hmmmm wild..... damn.
makes sense since the auto trans would require shaft to be place back further, but would shorten the halves of shafts quite a bit.

thanks, i need a break, this puter is making me want to smash it, i need to leave ehre and go away for a while and come back before,,,,

laterz ! outta here for a bit, damn

Look at it tomorrow. I think you've hit upon the problem. At least I feel better now. That is the only style 4 speed bracket I've seen, go figure.

Yeah, my 1/2 2wd auto BB has the first of the two pics from Jeff. Is this bearing what make them last longer than those that new69owner posted? Is that why so many people are wanting to go to 1 piece driveshaft? Just curious.

problem solved now, for at least the front prop shaft, it is now bolted ot tranny output yoke, afraid to try rear yoke now, will tommorrow, i noticed that i did not line up U joint yokes throughout the shaft when i slid them together and it owuld be a b*tch to get them back apart now, the splines are verrrry tight and wont hardly slide, needs a bfh to make the splines slide, i dunno whats wrong, so im gonna hook it up and hope for no vibration.,,,,
i wanna get another 4 speed v8 2wd longbed shaft though just in case... one for like the second pic that CPNE posted above. I really want the 4 speed to stay in the truck, the whle project is fighting against me all the way and very hard, but im gonna keep at it and keep cussing at it like ive been,,,, stil have yet to assemble top end of engine and install entire front clip(apart) and replace entire braking system including lines and hoses, calipers, and cylinders, etc etc,. and install seat and dash in cab and run wiring for taillights and all in rear and for engine compartment and find or make bumpers, at least in front for now,,

anyone ?
email me if you have something, please!

thanks again
