72 GMC 8.1 coming along

Slowly...

hoods gone,went with a cowl and now I need new hinges.

8.1 installed today,new poly mounts,DD plates,Howell harness/cpu inc.
Led headlights and A LOT more.

Have to find a nv4500 cross-member and have dana 80 FF/4.10/LS to install, keeping it a duallie/dually getting rid of the dana 70 hd.
Feeling stoked after waiting a long time.

Sounds good! What frame brackets did you use? I am planning about the same overall setup as you have but I may go ahead and use the Allison trans. Keep us posted on your progress.

Dirty dingo plates and the BB clam shells with some energy suspension inserts.Made the engine sit more forward and have plenty of room underneath. Was able to use my original 454 aftermarket headers also so that's a huge plus.

I have a pair of complete '72 mounts and a pair of '69 - '71 frame brackets and I wasn't sure which ones to use. I am going to use stock 454 cast iron exhaust manifolds.

So far only issue was relocating 2 coil packs because of clearance issue however I am going to try and find a alternative to the brake booster or just fabricate something so not a big deal.

Between the Dana 80,nv4500 and the GV looks like I won't need a 2 part driveshaft anymore. Get some picks soon.

You might use a hydroboost setup for steering and brakes. Here is a thread on it. I am going to try and use the hydroboost out of the 8.1 donor truck on mine.

What bell housing are you using for your NV4500 trans?

I contemplated this swap for either my 57 or 72. I had a running driving 01 suburban 2500 to use as my play ground. The 72 ultimately went the way of the 6.0 and the 57 is still sitting. Alas my desire to go fast out weighed my ambition to do the 8.1 swap. The Suburban got sold and the Camaro got bought. After having two 8.1 trucks (other was an 05 3500 rclb) and the vortec 454 in my 98, the 8.1 is my favorite factory big block. Sooooo much torque. Cool swap I’m in to see this one!

Its pricey, yet so far its been pretty easy. I'm trying to find out if the TH400 cross member can be used with the NV4500 maybe with different mounts. I keep reading people have done this.

I'm jumping from one thing to another on this project and I have help doing it so its probably a year out since we are redoing the entire truck and not just the swap.

Anybody know if a TH400 cross member can be used with a NV4500? I'm finding mixed info all over the place.Maybe just a transmission mount change?

I can't help you there. The NV4500 that I put in my '72 Dually hangs out in mid air. I used the stock SM465 bell housing and clutch setup on it. If it warms up a little in the next couple of days I will go out and see if I can slip a TH350 or 400 cross member under mine.

Anybody swap in a Dana 80 in their 69-72? they have a pinion that's off center so trying to figure if I should leave it slightly off or center the pinion and let one side stick out a bit more...

Leave it as is. Ford 9" rears are made same. If tire/wheels are centered per chassis, you're done!!!

I wonder if you could run manual brakes on your setup, not using a booster, like many stock pickups were built back then...afterI get my 67 and 68 C-10's converted to 5 lug and disc, I plan to go manual disc on both...not sure if I will like it though...

Yea I figured it wouldn't hurt anything having a slight angle on the driveshaft so I'm just going to mount the diff squared off. I'm going to go with a hydro booster or something equal in size,I need the stopping power.
