Gear selector pointer

I have a 72 C-10. I'd like to line this pointer up a little better be hind the letter of the gear I'm in.
Need a little advice,

Linkage is adjustable at steering column in engine compartment, loosen nut, have someone hold shift lever in alignment and tighten nut.
