Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

Which is going to cause the grindie feeling when you turn the wheel with a power steering setup, is it the pump or the gearbox? Can you tell?

Re: Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

Interested to hear opinions as mine is slightly the same way. I'm assuming its maybe a bearing near the wheel?

Re: Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

I would check steering column bearings. I think mine sounds and feels a little grindy too. I think mine is coming from the upper bearing in the column.

Re: Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

This feels more like a hydraulic pulsation kind of vibration. I do have a leak on my pump reservoir, and I read this morning that you can also suck air in the leak. I am going to replace the pump, but I am afraid the gearbox may be a problem also.

Re: Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

I second the hydraulic pulsation, however my feeling is that the pump is running to slow. Does not happen a few rpms higher than idle, so I think i need to speed the pump up. Larger pulley on crank, or smaller pulley on pump. Although if it is the steering column bearings, they are easy to replace. LMC had them. The lower one may have ground a groove in the steering shaft, so you might have to find someone to weld build and grind.

Re: Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

I would get a pair of mechanic's stethoscopes and have a friend turn the wheel back and forth while I listened to the various components. Don't for get the lower steering column bearing. (Which where my bet is placed. They fail or come loose at times). If you can feel the grinding there should be no problem hearing it with a stethoscope. I have also had some success using a wooden dowel (instead of the stethoscope) to locate those evil sounds.
