Another power steering swap post
Hi and thanks I have a 64 c10 and I'm going to install power steering in it. I'm going to buy the bracket from Capt. Fab. Looks like his are the best to use. My question is. I know there are several years I can use for the steering box but what year do you think would be the best to use. Thanks again for your comments and help Bob

Re: Another power steering swap post
I've done it to a 68 and a 66. Both times the pieces came from the junk yards. On the 68 I got the box from one truck and the pump from another. On the 66 they came from the same donor. I think 68 on up is good but somewhere around 1980 they switched to metric fittings. At the back of the pump the fitting can be switched from standard to metric or vice versa. As for steering box ratios or other anomalies between the years I haven't a clue.

Re: Another power steering swap post
the pump will depend on mounting and the short or long water pump which affects pulley alignment. you can use the early pump with the later box .

Re: Another power steering swap post
There isn't any particular year steering box that is any better than another.
The '68-'86 C series and '87-'91 R series steering boxes and pitman arms are all interchangeable. As vince1 said, in 1980 the fitting style changed from SAE to Metric with an o-ring

Re: Another power steering swap post
I used a 1974 GMC 1/2 ton PS box and the CaptainFab bracket. Worked out great. While making this upgrade, you should also consider installing a telescoping lower steering shaft. It's much safer. Since the PS box sits off the frame a bit further, there is a small change in the angle of the steering shaft. That can be corrected by using a U-joint. Here's my thread.
