I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

heres pics of what I have going on. This engine is a 79 350 that I have bought parts for to make it look like it should have in my 69.. The a/c brackets are from a 69 the pulleys are from a 71 or 72 . As you vcan see in the pics I have to "shim" the back of the compressor to get it to line up. all other belts line up just fine. I'm not sure what I have going on here hoping someone may see something wrong and tell me. The shim thing isn't going to work because the top bracket won't line up. If you see or know what's going on here let me know... thanks in advance,

Talking Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

I had a double water pump pulley on the 305 and the AC went on the second puley so you 3 row it should be on the middle pully not the outter 3rd one.

Here is the correct belt line up for a small block.

Outside belt is crank and power steering. Middle belt is crank water pump and AC. Inner belt is water, crank and alternator.

Are you sure the pulleys and brackets are for short or long water pump ?

I posted a pic..... I guess the problem is the crank pulley... If they were for a long waterpump would the other two belts still line up?

Wink Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

From this picture it looks like you need a differant crank pulley setup. Your crank shouldn't have that big gap between the pulleys. They should all be tight and they should line up fine.

That's what i'm guessing that too,, but all the pulleys came off the same engine I bought them from a forum member ? I 'm trying to contact him but no luck so far

Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

GM had so many variations of pulley combinations it's ridonkulous. Single, double, triple, quadruple, A/C, no A/C, P/S, 2wd/4wd, small block, big block.

Typically, for an A/C & Power steering set up you would have a double groove pulley on the W/P and a triple on the crank. The inside is for the Alternator, middle for A/C, and outer for P/S.

Move the A/C to the middle and get a new crank pulley. The seller didn't mislead you, the truck it came off of had a different set up. I can't really tell from the pics, but does your crank only have two grooves? It looks to me like the truck your pulleys came from had PS but no A/C.

Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

The crank pulley looks correct to me for a SWP, just wrong "set up." The long water pump crank pulley sits far off the balancer, like this (I converted my truck from a 73+ LWP to correct looking SWP set up):

Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

The pulley set for a SWP keh27 got from me when I parted out C20 I had awhile back. The AC brackets on my truck looked different from what you are using at least it looks like to me. I wonder, are you using a different balancer perhaps that is not quite as thick? The one that was on my C20 was pretty massive. The threads in the end of the crank snout were bad so I couldn't pull the OEM balancer off.

Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

The pulleys you have are for a short water pump setup, its just that your lower inner crank pulley is for a non-ac setup. The pictures that ANDY4639 posted are correct, The grooves that you have your AC belt on in the pictures are originally intended for a smog pump.
You just need a double groove crank pulley like this:

...stuff deleted
I fought and fought and fought with issues on my truck with pulley combos for years. What happened to me was under certain RPMs, the alternator belt would set up a vibration that was actually quite wild and would eventually snap off the alternator mounting bracket. Which on a truck without AC also takes out your water pump. Which is bad. (I added AC later).

What I finally ended up doing is getting a FULL set of pulleys off of a truck that wasn't bastardized by one or more previous owners. Since I was planning to add AC I made sure I got them all off of a truck the the general made with AC.

That was over 10 years ago. I have never looked back.

Long story short, watch the parts board for a fresh part-out and ask to purchase all the pulleys on the water pump and all the pulleys on the crank.

This was one of the under hood pics I took. This was a factory AC truck-he opted to not take the AC brackets since he already had those...but, mine are different than he shows. ???

Man I'm not blaming you at all. If it sounded that way I surely didn't mean for it to....i'm just needing help to figure it out. I do know that 67-68 a/c brackets are different but I thought 69-72 where the same . It could be all on me but I was wanting some insight.

My '71 with A/C does not use that top bracket that shows in the PO's photos. If I remember, I will snap a photo this evening.

Thumbs up Re: I need suggestion on why a/c pulley is not lining up right.

The pictures I posted are the correct setup for a c-10 small block short water pump with factory alternator, AC, power steering. If you want to mix and match the pulleys that fine but the correct setup is as I showed. The setup you have is for a non AC truck.

Factory AC brakets:

This shows the belt routing.

Factory AC brackets I took off and sold.

My '71 setup is similar to post #16 of the above link....no top bracket. It works fine.
