Re: Ignition module

I used a Proform brand. It's actually what's in the GM performance parts distributors. I'm not running at high rpm so there's no need for a more expensive one.

Take the cape off. Take the rotor off. Take wires off module, remove module, put new one on with wires in the same place. Put rotor and cap back on. Takes less than 10 minutes.

Re: Ignition module

I have read that the NAPA ones and the GM ones are the best and to stay away from the generic ones from the discount stores. When you replace it, do use the little pack of dielectric grease the give you or you will be doing it again soon.

Re: Ignition module

The reason I ask is this is my second new one in 3 weeks. While trying to chase down a "fish bite feeling" miss when at cruising speed I changed the module with a BWD CBE4 from Advance. It somewhat helped or maybe not but it did get worse to the point that the motor would just stop dead. After rolling to a stop it fired right up. Well after this happened the third time I put my old back in and it never died on me and the miss was still there. So I took the BWD back and they gave me another one. After installing the new module it still didn't fix the miss totally. Everything I can think of has been changed or rebuilt including carb. Maybe these BWD CBE4 modules aren't that good and I need GM, I don't know, but I'm tired...

Re: Ignition module

Its not likely a bad module will cause a miss.

Re: Ignition module

Modules aren't really something that you can tell a difference with driving under 4k RPM. They either work, or they don't. If you're burning up modules, you should look elsewhere for your problem, or make sure you buy a quality one with a good warranty. Best of luck tracking down your issue!

Re: Ignition module

You are way over thinking this. Modules either work or don't work.
Yes, there are modules that are for performance use, that are for extended RPMs.
But really, an HEI module is an HEI module. Just be sure to use the supplied grease/compound when installing the module.

Yes, that is a standard 4 pin module, super typical module.

Re: Ignition module

To all that say that modules either work or they don't, no offense but, I have seen 2 intermittent GM modules, 1 Accel, and one cheapie. They'd work fine until they quit.

The weirdest one was the Accel module. The car was hard start. Sometimes had to crank 5-10 seconds then the tach would jump and the car would start. I drove it that way for 2 weeks until I opened the hood and changed it.

For some silly reason I kept it for a spare. No further problems with it until I put it in the truck one day to troubleshoot a miss. It worked well enough to let me drive around the block then it failed in the street in front of the house.

Have you ever tried to push a Longhorn up a slanted drive by yourself?

Another note: clean the OLD grease off the base of the mounting surface prior to applying the new dielectric grease. Inspect the condenser, and the plugs that mate to the module.
