Is this rear end worth using in a 59 Apache?

Hi All,

Got a free rear end this weekend that a friend of a friend supposedly was using but decided to go with a 9 inch. All I can tell about it is that it's got 12 bolts and from what I can find is probably out of a late model truck. Currently my apache is sitting on the stock rear and measuring form the flange at the edge of the housing it's about 57 inches which is only about 1/2 inches wider than the stock housing.

Would this be a decent rear end to use? My plan for the truck is an around town toy and occasional long (3-4 hour) trip to the country. I will be putting a 6.0 LQ4 in the truck.

I will probably 4 link the rear so any advice on this or other rear end setups would be appreciated.

I use them often. Yours is a truck axle, and there are differences in axles, axle tubes and pinion diameter and carrier between car and truck so don't but car parts for the rear end think they'll work.

On a side note , everything I've read about 12 bolt vs 9" in a stock form the 12 bolt is a better heavier duty axle and uses less HP to run.
Once you get into currie or other aftermarket 9" the 9" is much better.

It looks like a truck axle from a coil spring truck.

That stamped number on the axle tube is what tells what it is. I'm thinking it looks a lot like an axle we pulled out of my friend's 66 Chev pickup when we swapped axles under it.

By the way the axle flange to axle flange measurement doesn't mean a whole lot, you need wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface.
