It's a common misperception that a 2bbl carb gets better fuel mileage than a 4bbl carb, while that can be true, what's typical is that 2 barrels have larger jets (squirt more fuel) than the 4bbl primary jets (the two it's actually running on until you mash the go pedal and all 4 open) so as long as you keep your foot out of it and keep the secondaries closed for the most part (which for most everyday driving is very possible to use them minimally) you can get better fuel mileage with a 4 barrel, so yes, you want a 4 barrel You definitely won't see that 260hp number with a 2 barrel.

Also, 2 and 4 barrels use different intakes anyway!

Has anyone NOT PAINTED one of these motors? I always see them painted in the trucks I see for sale/shows, etc. I like the black, and I don't want to paint it. How well does it hold up? They look to be well painted in all of the "just got my motor" pics I've seen.

Yes, I ordered one from this sale. It will be here next week.

The one pictured above I bought about 2 years ago. I ended up putting it in the '69 Suburban. I have just over 3000 miles on it and it runs great and always starts on the first revolution... I did not paint it, I left it Black and so far it is holding up good.

See I wanted to know if I could paint it and still have the warranty. So this answers my question, looks like I can paint orange over the black and still be valid. So that's good.

My truck scoots right along with it's current worn out 350. It moved along just fine when it was a 250 straight 6 too. I don't want or need a High HP motor.

3K is ANOTHER $1,800 dollars. THEN with that kind of HP my 700R will burn up and I'll have to spend ANOTHER 3K to buy one that can handle that kind of power.

I have the same engine I just put in my 83. Originally it was for the 70, but ended up here. It is equipped like you are talking about. Edelbrock 1406, Performer and stock HEI. I put Headman Headers on mine so there was less issue with plug wires.

Make sure (if you don't already) you run the Edelbrock Divided Heat Insulator (EDL-9266) between carb and manifold. My carb doesn't like heat.

My engine came with both the 2 o'clock and the 12 o'clock timing tab. I used the 2 ''clock tab and I used this balancer
Professional Products 80000 PowerForce Street Damper (PRP80000)

I also used these plugs (shorties) to help with header clearance.

With my T350C, 2.76 gears...I can light up the tires (OK tire) without hardly trying. IT runs real strong. To me it is a great combo for the drivers we do with our two beasts

On my 290 HP crate motor I think we had to use plugs off the bottom of my old engine ,I believe they were in the water jacket area ,does this sound right ? I think we even had to pull the part the oil filter screws onto from my old motor ,I would like to just buy these parts if anyone knows exactly what they are called as I want to leave the old motor intact . By the way ,I have put well over 50,000 miles on my wife's 72 malibu convertible with the 290 HP crate motor with no problems whatsoever .

Thanks Bill! Looks like that balancer will work for me, and a pretty good price. I think I found the flywheel I need too, but there's two different tooth counts, and I don't want to replace the starter too... may need to wait until the motor is pulled.

I've never ordered a crate motor before and am thinking about getting one of these for a future project. I live on a culdesac and it would be difficult for a big rig to deliver to my residence. Any experience with this?

Do you have a friend or a local business they could deliver it to. You could just meet them there with a pickup and slide it from the liftgate into the back of the pickup.

Great job lookin out for others!! These gm crate motors are great and for this price can't go wrong. If I had extra cash I'd buy one just to have for another future project.

When I got mine delivered, I had it sent to where I work....slid right off the tractor trailer on to the loading dock.....then used a engine hoist to lower it to my pickup.....fast & easy !

In my experience, that is THE best how-to sbc rebuild book I've ever owned. I have several of David Vizard's books and they seem to cover ALL the bases - excellent illustrations and easy to understand. I've had mine since 1983 and still use it. Thx for sharing Jesse, Jeg's should give you a cut on subsequent sales! this IS a great price on a gm long block and a great replacement engine for a stock truck. My po stuck one in my C20 about 10 years or so ago and it runs like a champ. Only about 40k on it right now, but it's a great little engine. Gotta love gm. As for hp - it's more than enough for a stock truck - I can understand the earlier "more hp" comment - but some folks like to keep their trucks motors' stock for simplicity and reliability. If I could have my truck set up like it rolled off the assembly line, I would, but the gm crate long block is a close 2nd. Oh, and since the difference in price between $1200 and $3000 is, well, more than the price of the engine itself, the math kinda makes the case... Enjoy your build!
