I figured as long as I was pulling four crossmembers and changing the cab mounts, the body was coming off.

Re: 67 Plain Jane C10 396 build

Today, in between jobs, I made an appointment for Bob's Muffler in Bakersfield. Thursday, they're going to mandrel bend a 2 1/2 stainless exhaust for me with all the bells and whistles. I still need to pick mufflers...

http://www.bobsmuffler.com/

Check out their Exhaust Information tabs, lots of good stuff.

I also went to The Truck Shop for another load of small parts.

So tomorrow, I need to get the truck ready for the muffler shop. I just need to bolt down the cab, install the bed and doors, and get my fuel filler ready for Bob to bend a fuel pipe for me. I don't want any surprises while its on the trailer.

Tailpipes tucked into the corners of the fenders. I picked 18" Magnaflow mufflers.

Re: 67 Plain Jane C10 396 build

I broke in the cam and had a horrible rattling noise. It turned out to be the weights on the Centerforce pressure plate. I removed the trans and cut out the weights. Now it purrs.

She's definitely looking great there. Glad the noise was an easy track down and nothing too major!

Thanks, here's a photo of the noisy trouble makers:

I should have counted those SOBs, one of them fell into the pressure plate and I didn't notice it until I was setting up the clutch linkage. It wouldn't release the disc no matter how I adjusted it. I had my son push on the pedal while I watched the pressure plate release. I saw plenty of clearance between the disk and the plate, so I knew what had happened. Out came the tranny and clutch again. One of the weights was wedged in the nook and cranny of the the pressure plate. Once that weight was out, I knew it would be OK.

Re: 67 Plain Jane C10 396 build

Yesterday, I spent some time prepping and painting the wheels. I considered getting them powder coated, but I was worried that the color would be wrong. First, I painted the entire wheel in satin black, then I mixed up some Rustoleum for the faces, white with a little yellow and a dash of black. I've got $20 invested in the paint. They may be too yellow, I'll mount them and see how they look.

Today, I picked up a nice set of RCD Bilstein monotubes, these are badass shocks. I got the fronts installed today and will get to the rears tomorrow.

Re: 67 Plain Jane C10 396 build

Went for a road test today. I haven't aligned it yet, I only eyeballed the toe. It rode pretty nice. No weird handling at all. The gearing is nice and high, the full synchro tranny is a treat, as is the power steering. I opted to keep the brakes without power for now and so far they seem fine. The 396 has triple the power of the 250 and I can feel it. It'll fry the tires easily.

I've still got a lot to do, but at least now I can drive it.

Thanks, I've been in "Beast Mode" for the last month. Time to slow down and enjoy the details.

Re: 67 Plain Jane C10 396 build

Damn..... I've been watching as you pulled this one together. Looks like 3 months or so since you started the teardown to rolling again. (!?) Beast mode indeed! I set myself a similar goal as I just shut off the six for the last time and pulled the cab yesterday. Not sure if there's a beast mode left in me but we'll sure find out! 3 month goal for me to move under it's own power again. Good inspiration your build is!

3 speed OD for mine too. Do you know the 1st ratio of your gearbox? Did you keep the 3.08s in the 12 bolt? If you haven't found one yet i noticed parts 3 speed OD at a yard last week that might have the governor you're looking for. The trans is the old style pre '65 small box 3 speed. Governor might be the same?

It has been 48 days so far. I don't remember the ratio off hand for first gear. I'll look it up.
The 3:08 rear end had been re-geared to 2:76, prior to my ownership. I haven't had it on the highway yet, so I'll see how I like the 2:76's at high speeds. I may not need the OD, unless I re-gear the rear end to a lower ratio. Let me know if you go to look at that governor, the threads that go into the tranny are about 1 inch dia.

Here's a quick shot of the interior, while I wait at The Truck Shop. I got here 5 minutes before they opened and there was already 25 people ahead of me.

The factory radio delete plate was in the glove box, but this aftermarket one is siliconed on the dash and I'm hesitant to remove it and see what's behind it. The dash appears to be un-cut.

I have new pedal and dash pads, but the original pedal pads haven't fallen off and I'm liking the matching patina look.

Beautiful! Can you tell me how much difference there is in the dimensions of the factory radio delete vs the heater delete?
