Starter solenoid clicks and truck won't turn over

Yesterday my GMC was running fine. I go to start it this morning, and the starter solenoid by the fuse box just clicks. I have 12v at the purple wire...is this indicative of a bad solenoid?

probably... could also be a bad 12v going to the starter on the big red wire or a bad ground on the engine block but 95% of the time its just the starter solenoid.

one way you can check is have someone try to start it and crawl under there with a small hammer and tap on the starter and see if it starts. used to do that all the time when cars got towed in for a no start situation... same technique goes for a non working fuel pump.

Jump it. If it starts its the battery. If not its the starter. If you only have 12v I'd say the batt is dead. Should be at least 12.5

Could be the connection too, I had one that had a bad connection at the starter. Assumed it was a solenoid too.

Ok, so here's the next question: does anybody have the part number for the starter solenoid up by the fuse block? Only ones I can find are the starter-mounted solenoid.

What year truck do you have? There isn't a solenoid anywhere else, just on the starter. There is a relay in the fuse block on 96+ trucks. There is a relay behind the plastic cover on the firewall on the 88-95 trucks.
