differential gasket...anyone use silicone?
I am going to do my differential cover gasket over (leaking) and valve pan gaskets. I can find the valve pan gasket but not the differential gasket. A guy at the parts store said to just use a good grade of silicone since it isn't a high heat area and it will hold up. Anyone tried?

That's what I use...I think it was the red rtv or something like that...no leaks at all.

ive used silicone too just make sure that both the cover and the differential are good and clean before ya silicone it with the permatex hi temp silicone gasket maker and sealant

...used silcone many times get the ultra black...best damn silcone i've ever seen for sealing anything with oil....fixed my work boot with it once too...lol...

heck, till I started looking for rear end parts for my convertible, I didn't even know they made a gasket for rear diff covers......lmao

I got mine glued on too...been 2 years no problems. I think it is the only part of my truck that does not leak. (knock on woodgrain)

every article I ever read in hot rod and truck magazines never used the gaskets, always silicone. I never had problems with the silicone on any of my cars. just clean the two surfaces well.

on most new trucks you can't even buy a differential gasket, they all use silicone. as stated before, use the ultra black and make sure both surfaces are spotless, any leftover oil residue and it will leak. we only use silicone at work and never have any problems--as long as it's cleaned properly prior to installation.

Ultra black is the way to go. Just drain the diff well and make sure the surface is clean and dry. Put the silicone on the cover being sure to make a circle around each bolt hole and then put it on.
