My 'New" truck

I was able to go look at the truck last Sat. This truck was driven until 1977 and has been parked in a barn ever since. Everything is there and complete. It got some dents but is very solid overall. Can't wait til Sat. so I can go pick it up and bring it home. It's a 55 1st series.

Re: My 'New" truck

Thanks guys, it is very complete. My plans for the time being is to get it running and find out what issues it has. I know the brakes are frozen (pedal is rock hard). I'd like to keep it mostly stock for now and use it as a shop truck. Oddly enough this will be my first truck I have ever owned.

Re: My 'New" truck

good luck man, looks solid if its your first truck try to do things as right as possible I have a 53 five window I built 12 years ago in high school and now am tearing down again to do things the right way. Its worth it to do it right the first time. Working on it is the FUN part

Re: My 'New" truck

Ya my plan is to make it safe and drivable for now as a rustic shop truck. Moving back to Maine in the next year and will have plenty of room and time for complete teardown and build it right.
Got it home Sat. and cleaned the inside and the bed out. Got the carb cleaned, fluids all drained and changed and engine spinning over. Had to order some ignition parts, can you believe, not in stock? Got the peices today but no time to put them in.

Did some of these trucks come with no oil filter. The pictures where I see these mounted by the carb, I have nothing. There is just no filter canister around the engine at all, could it be remote somewhere else?

Re: My 'New" truck

You know what not sure about the old filter when I got my truck there was no motor so I put a small block 400 in it. It will be cool to get it on the road and driving. There is nothin wrong with drivin it as is for a while just as a word of advise once you do start its easier to just do things once. Im fighting everything again I should have done the first time. My truck has been sittin for about 8 yrs now so im getting excited about cruisin it around as im sure you are too. There classic head turners no matter what shape there in

Oil filters were optional on these trucks, not standard, so it is quite likely that yours never had one. You can use a filter off of any year 216 or 235 if you want the stock manifold mount. Once in a while new ones turn up on ebay, but don't worry if all you can find is a used one, because they can't wear out. If you don't care about stock appearance, you can use any modern remote mount filter and gain the advantage of a spin-on element.

Don't expect them to filter all the oil, they were a transient system at best. You can do a modification to force oil through the filter.

Smile Re: My 'New" truck

I have a new plan for the 55 now. A buddy who helped me go get the truck works with a guy that wanted to sell his 66 stepside. I'm buying it to use as a shop truck so I can just rip apart the 55 and do things right. The price was right and even better, I'll have 2 classic Chevys

No advice, just sayin' Hello to you Marietta guys from a Lawrenceville 57 owner. We local guys need to get together sometime. Almost forgot to mention, your truck looks straight and solid. Are you going to keep the 235?

Re: My 'New" truck

I like the 235 and it's very smooth with good power. For the time being I'm going to keep it pretty much stock and drive it. I always have a big grin on my face while driving it. Being factory is very cool but the realistic side of me says that if I really want to drive it (more than around town) I'm going to have to do something like IFS or S 10 swap. I'm moving to Maine within the next year and will have a much bigger shop where I plan on doing some major work but for now I'll drive as is.

Hey Old school. I read over you thread on the 65, good stuff. I'm looking to do the same with my stance, don't want it on the ground but lower than stock. I was confused at the end of the thread though, did you sell the fleetside bed or the 65?

Re: My 'New" truck

Haven't been on in a while... I unfortunately sold both the truck and the fleetside bed..

Did I see your 65 at the avenue show?.... I was making my way over and by the time I got there you were gone....

I think that it would be great to meet up sometime... its always nice to stare at another old truck...

Re: My 'New" truck

Ya, I was there for a while, looks like most people got run off by the rain. I wanted to talk to a few people about the AD trucks but nobody came around. Wish I knew you were there I would have hung around, I didn't know anyone and there wasn't many cars there. I stopped by that house on Allgood to ask about the truck but nobody home. Yours looks good, I think I'm going to take the 55 this month.

I didn't know about that one, that's closer than Canton for sure. Let me know if you're going to the next one.
