Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

Ok, I just picked up a 93 C3500 5.7/4L80E 2wd. The guy drove it 60 miles to my house and it ran great...or at least shifted fine...until today.
I have been working on the truck, fixing the tail light harness, removing old stereo system wiring, new headlight switch,etc...
The truck had a miss bad, so I changed the plugs(2 of which were destroyed), and the CTS was bad, so I changed it too.
I took it out for a test drive and it would not shift out of first!!! WTH? also my speedometer was NOT working....so I pulled some codes.
These are the codes I pulled;
15,24, and 83.
Also my "BRAKE" light is on. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

Code 15=coolant temp sensor circuit
Code 24=VSS circuit
Code 83=TCC Solenoid Fault

Your PCM isn't getting VSS Signal. It could be the VSS, DRAC Module, or wiring problem.

Is there any possibility you damaged any wiring not related to the stereo you removed?

Didnt take the cluster out at all. Just put on a new bezel, got the stereo adapter trim. The wiring I removed was an old amp power wire and speaker wires that ran under the floor, and some dead end switches that were mounted on the dash bezel.

Sounds like you disturbed or cut a ground that affects those circuits. I would retrace what you removed. Check your fuses too.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

The VSS code has nothing to do with the cluster.

Check the brake fuse. Its 15A. The DRAC gets its power from that fuse.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

Already checked all fuses. NONE of the wires I removed were attached to anything, just loose.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

Check the connections at the DRAC. There's not a lot to this system. There's a speed sensor, the DRAC, the PCM, and the wiring between them.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

All connections are good. I disconnected the battery and cleared the codes. After 15min or so I reconnected the battery and started it. The "BRAKE" light was still on, so I took it out, still would not shift. Brought it back. Neighbor asked if the speedo was working or not, I pulled codes and only got "83" this time, I took it back out to check speedo and the truck worked flawlessly this time???? Whats with that?
The only thing I did different was jiggle the ignition key a litlle, very minor turn and the "KEY BUZZER" comes on, turn it forward and it goes off, but that is the only thing I did different.
Could the ignition switch be the culprit?

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

well, it's back to not working. So I backed it into its spot for the night and turned it off. and then just for Sh*ts and giggles, I started it back up and the brake light went out and the speedo worked again.....????
Could this be an ignition switch problem?

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

Well, I thank you to the "2" people that did try to help. Maybe if this would have been a big budget build it would have gotten more activity. Thanks anyway. Gonna head on over to GMT400, GMFS and FullsizeChevy.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

No need to get upset that people can't fix your truck for you over the internet.

You have an intermittent problem. It could be caused by anything in that diagram, from a faulty sensor to a little chaffed wire or a corroded terminal or a bad module. These problems are hard to find in person.

Trucker, like I said, I appreciate your help greatly. It gave me a place to start. I dont have the manuals for the gmt400's yet, but will soon. Thank you again.

Yes, we'd like to know. And it could help other people in the future that have a similar problem.

Re: Trans problems...I have codes, need help.

Turned out to be a ground issue. I ran a ground from the harness ground on the intake to the frame. Problem solved. Sorry it took so long to respond...I forgot all about this thread.
