Post sm465 bulletproof?

I think the input shaft on my sm465 just gave up its ghost. Just chatters when put in gear. Anyway- I'm about to pull it and have a few questions for those that have done it before. Is it easier to remove the tranny and the transfer case as one unit or individually? Can the sm465 be rebuilt or do I need to find a donor? If rebuildable, any idea on cost and what to expect at the tranny shop? Finally, any tips on removal or installation would be appreciated.

I drop the t-case and tranny separately. I would block the motor up under the oil pan, and remove the cross member first, before the t-case. This makes it a lot easier to get to all the bolts. leave the t-case adapter bolted to the tranny when you pull it out. All of the parts for the 465 are available, and it can definitely be repaired. If it needs a shaft or gears (anything other than bearings or seals), it may be cheaper to buy a whole tranny at the junkyard than to buy the new parts. These trannies are pretty easy to find used.

Thanks burb. I'll let you know. I work fairly close to you and have been meaning to check out your fleet anyway.

I work in Plymouth now, NE corner of Hwy 55 and 494 if you ever need anything (w/o having to go 20 miles further west).

Trick number 2713

To get the old pilot shaft bushing out:
Pack the cavity where it is with heavy grease and then get something the same diameter as the pilot shaft and hit it with a hammer. The grease will work like a hydraulic jack and push the bushing out. You might have to repack the cavity once or twice, but this has always worked for me.
