New Henry Golden Boy 44mag

last weekend I took my new Henry big boy and tried it with Fiocchi 240 JSP's. Performance was ok, but the action was leaving me second guess my rifle choice. It's my first foray into straight wall cartridge in a lever. If I was anything less than what I consider violent it was difficult to chamber a round. It felt and looked like it was hanging up on the case mouth. Polishing the feed ramp crossed my mind, same as dressing up the bolt face.

Last night I loaded 100 XTP 240's into brand new Starline brass on top of IMr4227. This morning I gave it a whirl with pleasing results. Each of my loads chambered like it was begging to fall into place. The holes in paper at 100 yards was good considering my open sight skill is way over par, old eyes may have played a strong role also.

The only other qualm I had was the heavy trigger. After doing a red neck trigger job about 30 times it settled in. I haven't put a gauge on it yet but I call it good for now.

Optics is a concept I keep mulling over. It's not easy trying to find something worthy of such a beautiful rifle while keeping us from eating tuna and ramen noodles for the next 2 months.

Bottom Line. Would I suggest you get one of these? A definitive YES. The only advice I have is either spend big money on high quality factory loads or make your own. Each trigger pull, when coupled with very manageable recoil, brings a smile to the face. You could predictably eject brass into a coffee cup on the bench 8" away.

Quit fiddle farting around and go buy one of these. When you wife shoots it she'll forget about being mad at you for blowing $800+

Heh, my Ruger k10/22t throws brass like a cage full of little birds throwing seeds. I use a scope. I get groups now like I did with open sights 30 years ago. Old eyes is right.

I have 2 matching Henry Golden Boy's w/heavy octagon barrels one in .22 LR and one in .22 Mag, love em both. Have looked at the bigger center fires in various lever actions but haven't decided what I really want yet.

You want 44mag. I was going to get 357 but that's not legal for deer locally.

My Win 94 in 30-30 is a top eject. They fly over your head. If not careful they'll land in you butt crack if you don't have a long shirt or jacket

depends on the rifle

only have the two Henry golden boys for my kids with their initials and birth date serials..

but here's some vintage winchester porn

model 88 with Japanese Tasco 3-9x40 model W39X40 on Weaver rings and base

not a lever, but this model 100 makes a great pair with the model 88 above

for those not familiar, that's a Bausch & Lomb BALFOR A fixed 4x on Kuharsky Bros. plunger mount

Funny, this came up. My work association is offering a Henry Big Boy silver, with nice scroll work on it. It's little too expensive for me, but it sure looks nice.

Laughed when I read this. I whipped up this screen out of a soccer ball bag, so my wife would still go shooting with me. My Mini flings that brass hard!

My girlfriend bought the .22 Evil Roy to learn with. She fell in love with it real quick. She decided to buy a 30-30 brass receiver. Another beautiful Henry that shoots a nice group...

Thoughts and opinion on the Winchester 88? My local gun shop has one forsale in .308 22" barrel pre 1964.

any vintage winchester is worth a look

pre-64 is a plus, not sure what was changed if anything in the 88 but lots of other models suffered some changes..

big advantage though is the box feed, like the browning blr and savage 99, they can feed spitzer [pointed] bullets..

I gave $585 shipped for that one in .308win about 10 years ago.. good japanese tasco glass and haven't had any issues..

btw I stole that 100 for $417 shipped, caught 'em all snoozing

how much are they asking? caliber? scoped? condition? how many magazines?

quick breeze through gunbroker looks like ~$700 is the bottom end with several higher..

yer welcome to pm me too if you need some help with comps to figure your best price..

speaking of which, those humped pre-81 blr mags above are going for 200-300, mags are worth more than the belgian rifle

They are asking $750, 308, no scope, not sure on # of clips. Looks to be in good condition.

sounds like good price, fair anyways..

you can check here for comps listed or go to advanced > completed items tab [must be logged in] to see what they actually sell for or bids ceilings on ones that don't sell..

https://www.gunbroker.com/All/search...inchester%2088

good luck!

Re: New Henry Golden Boy 44mag

a real Henry I love it! but I'd have to sell half of my collection for that

btw, here's the kids henrys.. they're regular golden boy .22lr with better than average grain stocks..

kinda long story but actually talked to Anthony Imperato and he emailed me and my son [account I set up for him]

haven't had them out together for pictures, they just sit in the safe with their socks on until the kids are old enough

and for those interested, you can buy the receiver covers from henry and have them engraved easily..

very welcome..

they are nice.. my dad bought his BLR81 in .308 in the 80's and it's gorgeous.. takes the flat bottom mags that are readily available too

took a lot of critters and some deer with it

his Marlin 336 30-30 and model 39A .22lr are both from the late 50's and the 336 has one of grandpa's custom stocks..

he carved for reinhart fajen in the 60's and 70's.. one of his best, he had amazing skills..

immigrated from germany with his tools and nothing else.. started as a pattern maker..

here's a piece fajen gave us when he passed.. grandpa hated it because it was a simple pattern and he preferred to draw his own but it was a store sample of a catalog item..

fits a remington rolling block of some kind.. one day I'll have to find a rifle for it..
