Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

The regulator doesn't have any thing to do with the start system. It only regulates the voltage for the charging system.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

Attached is the wiring diagram, the ignition switch is isolated in view A. Here are the wires you should have going to the ignition switch.

16 GA red TO cigar lighter (not needed to start or run) attached to BAT
14 GA red FROM ammeter, needed to power starter attached to BAT
20 Ga violet to solenoid attached to the START (I think this goes thru the starter button)
20 GA dark green to bottom of resister attached to ING 2
20 GA brown to to top of resister attached to ING 1
20 GA pink to gas gauge attached to ING 1 with one above
14 GA pink to accessory block and turn signal if equipped attached to ACC (not required to start or run)

If the PO has changed out wires or colors you will need to start tracing them.

You need power to the switch BAT. When you turn the switch on power is sent to Cigar, gas gauge and accessory block and one side of the resistor. When you hit start power goes thru the START to energize the solenoid and to the other side of the resistor. During start you get full power to the coil to make up for the starter motor voltage draw. After it starts the coil is powered by the other side of the resistor at a lower voltage. Note that this has nothing to do with the charging cycle (generator or voltage regulator) that is a separate circuit to charge the battery.

Make sure the 14 GA Red is hot, if not check for bad connector or broken wire back to the back of the ammeter. If it is hot trace the violet wire checking for loose connector, broken wire or short to metal. Even if it won’t start if those two are good the starter will turn. Once its turning if it doen’t start check the ING 1 and 2 wires to make sure you are getting power to the coil.

Since it was running and turning I suspect something is not connected right, or a connection got loose or broken at the ignition switch.

If you just want to get it running you can run a jumper from the + battery terminal to the + coil and then jump a wire momentarily from the battery wire on the solenoid to the solenoid post where the violet wire connects to turn the starter, usually the small post towards the engine. One it starts you will need to pull the wire off the coil to stop it (I use an alligator clip and insulated pliers to keep from getting shocked). I once lost my keys on a fishing trip and drove my truck back to town hot wired like that.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

There is a black wire that has no clip at the end. They all look red to me Orrie. There is a clip with 3 prongs and they have a directed way they go in(EASY) and then theres the individual wires and that loose wire that wraps around one of them prongs

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

Loose wrap is a fire waiting to happen. Assume the connector (three prong) wires are right, then trace the others to see what match the wiring diagram. One of them is probably the solenoid wire. Do you still have the foot stomp start?

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

Sure do.Only problem I have is tracing it. I can't get under there and look without tearing the seat HA !!! There is a Clip that has a black thing that looks like the loose wire needs to go in there.I'm going to get that schematic to that paper printed out

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

The original keys had the code stamped on a part that knocked out of the key blank. The two knockouts (round key, square key) could be threaded on a ring. The dealer always did the knockout on delivery and the codes were in an envelope.

As long as the owner stays in his "mad" or "insane" mode it will be difficult to know what the actual problem is. Working on old stuff can be frustrating but the solution is usually found by stepping away from the problem, not attacking it.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

The problem is knowing where the wires go

Because the wires are the same color

Already have keys for it

That is a good print out orrieG made .
i had the same prob when i got my 57 - every wire was the same color -
i know this is a b(*&^ but take each wire one at a time and follow it to destination . with the help of the schmatic orrie posted than label it . it a big PITA but at least you know what goes where . good luck !! my 02 centavos worth .

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and in the electrical or cabling section you will find a book or circuit labels like this. I have one I use for my house and cars. Tracing wires is a pain, usually end up needing a helper on the other end or side of the fire wall but no easy way out. Also get a cheap multimeter for testing continuity. Once one identify the ends of each wire you can test to see if it is a good connection, broken, or partially broken. New wiring harnesses are labeled every 6 inches along the wire unless you are a masochist and opt for all black with not labels. This is one of many mind numbing learning experiences you will encounter along the way.

Gen light will be on until you get it running. trace the wire back from the solenoid thru the starter button, switch is not talking to the solenoid.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

Did it start with the switch and button/foot stomp or did you hot wire it? All of the output terminals on the switch are only hot when the switch is on, so even if you wired say the accessory to the coil circuit it would still shut off. Might be a short in the switch (doubtful if it worked ok before) or somehow the coil circuit thru the resistor got wired to a constant power source. You can use a multimeter to test the switch to see if after your turn it on the ING1 or ING2 terminals are staying hot.

Did the generator light go off?

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959

I fixed it, it was loose wires and mixed wires. I put everything back the way it was and now its over at my neighbors getting ready to be sanded on some areas.Yes the Generators light went off, and its charging like it should.I took off the ugly Tach that was around the Steering column and the wires

Good job. Tell your friend to not get to over enthuistic with the blaster, easy to build up heat and warp panels.

I highly doubt that.

You may need the cigar lighter to plug in electronic chargers.

Looks like it'll only need to be flushed... now to get it your way

Do you need it right away? If not, I'll be heading to Phila, PA this summer- if you do need to sooner than later, I can try to see if I know of anyone heading to the Autofair?
