Re: Just another twin turbo 4.8L build. Project "Short stroke"

Started pulling it apart today.

Here are some of the bearings. #1

#5 they all are wearing like this

Of course the cylinder was rusty enough that I had to put a little force behind tapping it out... and then I dropped it... glad I'm not reusing the stock pistons!

Passenger side

Driver side

Cylinder #1

Got the pistons out and my buddy got the harmonic balancer off. Looks like he used a bolt to press against the crank shaft and now it's stuck in there my girlfriend came over to hang out so I didn't want to get too involved tonight. I'll look it over in the morning and finish taking the engine apart.

Thanks. I'm really enjoying this truck. Even if I've had it parked longer than I've had it driving lol. How is the big block swap going?

Got the bottom end taken apart. Last thing that needs to be done are the freeze plugs/cam bearings but I'll let the machine shop take care of that.

Nice and grimy. Still has the junkyard markings

Debating where or not to keep stock crank or go with a scat crankshaft.

Not a bad block... just dirty

I'll end up buying a stand for this... dropped a 327 crank on my foot last year and I was limping for 2 weeks... my buddy had it leaning on a pole and when we were cleaning out the shop it landed dead on my 2nd toe knuckle.... I've never hit the ground so fast in my life... not even while being shot at haha.

That's what I was mentioning last night. It went in a few theads... might just have the machine shop take it out if I plan on using this crank

Stock cam I'll throw on ebay dirt cheap.

It's going pretty good, If you follow my thread, then I'm sure you know I got all the wiring done. Only big things now are mounting the radiator and the exhaust manifolds or headers.. what ever I find first. Oh, and thanks for asking! means alot!

Yeah I've been watching it. I really like that blue. There was a time I was thinking on doing my truck that color but I've decided to stick with the red...

Between you and my buddy Jon (1963c-10) I've been really thinking of doing a big block build soon. I've always thought they were cool especially the 454.

Re: Just another twin turbo 4.8L build. Project "Short stroke"

Yeah I like the blue to, but my choice would be the red.. I LOVE red GM trucks, Because i was raised around one.. I thought about painting my truck red at one point.. lol then decided black like the 454ss trucks, then found someone doing that already, so I'm staying blue for now! BBC are great, I haven't even drove mine yet and I love it! Do a Build man! Just build this LS.. put it in, and sell your 5.3 you got to fund a 454 build!

Lag? What lag?

This was just foot-braked, no 2-step, converter barely loaded without being up on it making boost.

That's a 2900 lb turbo LS1 RX7 to my left, and the chase car is a full bolt-on/tune C6Z

I will agree with the others and say that you may want to re-think your turbo selection. Twin 70s on a 4.8/5.3 might not give you the overall performance you're after. It might make hero dyno numbers, but the drivability might not be there. If you want to stick with a cheap ebay turbo, look into the twin GT35s.

I would also like to add that after buying somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 junkyard LS engines, that has to be BY FAR the grossest one I've seen. lol.

Hey Wasted how much meth do you end up using (i.e. 1 gallon per tan)? What boost level does yours kick on?

Re: Just another twin turbo 4.8L build. Project "Short stroke"

Doesn't really use as much as you might think. I have dual 1000 cc nozzles, and i only have to top it off about once a week or so (1 gallon reservoir). It lasts way longer than a tank of fuel. lol. I am running straight VP Racing meth from a 55 gallon drum.

I have it set to turn on about 1 psi of boost, but it's barely "on" at that point, since the meth is progressively controlled as a percentage of total fuel flow through the Holley Dominator.

So when you switch to the turbo setup your switching transmissions too right? Then upgrading your axles front and rear? Transfer case too? Nothing cooler than seeing a 4 wheel burnout with 35" tires no less. A guy in Cali I knew would do that with huge big block chevy.

Definitely. Havent decided on what trans I want to go to but I definitely want manual. Being that I don't plan on doing serious off roading I might just take them to east coast gear and have them build the axles.

That big block was probably all motor too wasn't it? Must've been a fun truck.

Re: Just another twin turbo 4.8L build. Project "Short stroke"

I am thinking of a twin turbo for my '65 since it will be a fun vehicle and not a DD, even though I might drive it to work when the weather is nice...

I'll have to watch and see what you end up with. BTW, that is the nastiest engine I have ever seen...lol...

Yeah it was. Its definitely going to be a fun project and I can't wait to dive right in. Currently my goals right now for my projects are:

Get the K10 running under the stock 5.3 for now, Get the '63 up to safety and daily driver status, and possibly swap a crate motor in the '96. Too cold to do any work outside for me so I am counting down the days until warmer weather comes by.

Brought up the heads, valve covers, and other misc. stuff up to work. Threw it all in the parts washer do I don't have a bunch of dirty parts laying around the shop. I'm planning on bringing the block and heads to a local machine shop in the next couple of weeks.

Heading down to Jon's house this weekend and will be working on the 63. Should have some updates for that build soon. I'll post some pictures of the heads once they get out of the parts washer.

Yeah. I guess I never incorporated it into my signature yet. Going to turn my attention to it for the month of April. Going to do my best to get it ready for good guys this year... only have about 5 potential days to work on it. 2 of which will be hunting days I'll have to give up
