Tie rod fitment

I have a 1972 gmc. I took it apart 5 years ago and threw out the old front end parts. The inner tie rods are too big for the cross shaft and do not go through far enough to tighten down the castle but and get the coder pin through. I ordered them from cpp and they are the right ones. I got some from napa to make sure it wasn't the wrong ends.

Re: Tie rod fitment

Need more info.
What year spindles?
Tie rods and all the steering parts need to match the spindles.

Re: Tie rod fitment

I have 71 72 spindles and the centerlink is from a 72 I had the setup driving with the spindles before I took it apart and I ordered all new front parts inners outters and adjusters. so the centerlink and spindles were used before together with the old tie rods. The outer and adjusting sleeves fit fine. And the inner fits in the adjusting sleeve just not the centerlink. It sticks out about a half inch and I can get the castle nut on until it is flush with the end of the link but not far enough to get the cotter pin through it is alot off.

Re: Tie rod fitment

Sounds like you have 73-87 inner tie rods.
They are bigger.

If everthing worked before you ordered new parts,... sounds like your new parts are incorrect.
Outer tie rods should be RH thread.
Inner tie rods should be LH thread.
(71-72 and 73-87 tie rods are both 11/16" diameter on the connector end)

Re: Tie rod fitment

The ones from cpp are for 71 or 72. The ones I got from napa were for a 72 they both for the same. I ordered a set of moog ones from advanced to see if those would fit. Hopefully they were both wrong and these are right. Makes sense though. Thanks

Re: Tie rod fitment

I am still having problems and I got another inner tie rod end. It still doesn't fit as you can see in the picture. I made sure the part number and specs were right and they all seem to be ok.

Re: Tie rod fitment

I'm not sure. That centerlink worked with disc drop spindles for 71 72 before I took it apart and it's the same centerlink out of the truck which is a 72. I put drop spindles on it 5 years ago then took it apart tossed all the parts except the spindles and centerlink. That was a few years ago. Now went to put it together and this is what I got. So I'm not sure how it worked before or what the deal was but it was together before.

Re: Tie rod fitment

I feel your pain. I converted my 70, but my center link is set up for manual steering. Now I'm hosed. everything is 70, but the pitman arm wont fit the center link.

Re: Tie rod fitment

Since you took everything apart, and tossed everything out, are you sure you have the center link on correct. Taper may be the wrong way not allowing it to go inside...Jim

Re: Tie rod fitment

Taper is the right way. Everything fits and lines up. Just doesn't go all the way through. I'm really at a loss for what happened

Re: Tie rod fitment

You're going to have to start swapping parts.
Inner tie rods or centerlink from a different year.

Re: Tie rod fitment

I ran into the sAme issue. My truck was a 68 with 71 spindle set up. So i ordered 71 drop spindles. Worked fine. Then when i bought parts to rebuild to my surprise they did not fit. Sounds to me like you have a earlyier center link that has smaller taper. I ended up with a custom adjuster from cpp 71 outers and i think (68 outers ran as inners) i dont remember caus its been so long but i know they are mixed matched cpp can hook you up!

OOPS!
You will need 67-70 outers in the INNER location.

67-70 outers are required because they are left hand thread (5/8" diameter).
Your 71-72 outers are right hand thread (11/16" diameter).
The conversion tie rod sleeve connects the two.

ALL of this is correct if you do have a 67-70 centerlink.

(I have a set of brand new 67-70 outer tie rods setting on the shelf because I lalso earned this the hard way)

It's all written down here:
