First time restoration early 60's C60 dump -getting myself into trouble?

So I'm trying to buy a 1960 C60 dump 292 inline 6 that reportedly was parked 5 years ago when it ran and dumped. He says he always had some trouble with 1st gear but just started in 2nd. Other than that I don't have much information. Engine looks OK and the frame isn't super rusted.

I'd like to get this running and street worthy. I have little knowledge about these trucks, which is a big part of why I'm picking it up, but I'd like to know some common pitfalls with restorations with them. Parts seem relatively available, true? How worried should I be about either fixing the transmission or getting a replacement?

Also, I need it towed to my house - any ideas on the weight so I can tell the tow company?

Same with my '62 GMC 4000 which is pretty much the same truck, weighed about 8,000.

By the way, if the truck actually has a 292, it is not the original engine. The 292 was not available till '63.

Also, finding one and changing the Trans, is not really that big of a deal.

Is it a 4-Speed or 5-Speed?

The guy selling it doesn't know the year and I haven't checked the vin yet. It very well could be 1960's, not a 1960.

With a dump bed should I still figure it's under 10,000 for tow purposes?

It has a 4 speed transmission.

Not running, mystery transmission issue and considering a $300 tow fee, does $500 seem like a good buy?

Knowing the GVW would help more with an estimate of the weight.

Sounds like a pretty good deal, but hard to say without any of us actually being there to check it over, but pictures would help if you have any.

A 4-Speed Trans would be easier to deal with than a 5-Speed.

Keep us posted on it.

Re: First time restoration early 60's C60 dump -getting myself into trouble?

Well I went to see it last night and it was a bit of a bust. Had a bit more rust and rot of the sheet metal than the pictures showed and the dump bed was in pretty rough shape. The tires were smooth bald not just a little bald. As I'm not a great welder it seemed like more work than I have money to put into it. It did start though and the pto did function. Someone with more know-how and money than I would have a good time with it. Rated for 19,500 and it was a 1966 according to the VIN.

Sounds like it would be a good farm truck.

Did you take any pictures ?

No pictures (phone doesn't take pictures and I don't have a camera) but here's the craigslist posting.

Re: First time restoration early 60's C60 dump -getting myself into trouble?

By the Emblem, it's a '64.

Pretty much like I figured, would be a good farm truck or site truck.

I can see the rust from here. It must have been pretty rough close up.

If it were next door to me, I wouldn't mind having it for about $400.

Typo: Was a 1964 per the VIN. I was a bit disappointed but I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks everybody for your responses.
