SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
I have put the corvette ramhorn manifolds on my jimmy. Im having problems with misfires down at the sp, and its melting my wires. So I would like to get some heat shields. I see these are for 62-65, but I cant seem to find shields for that early of year. Will ones from say 67-70 work with zero or little modifications?

Re: SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
Instead of heat shields, run your plug wires up from below like corvettes did with ram's.

Re: SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
They are melting where they connect to the plug, not mid wire from laying on the manifold.

Then you need better boots to handle the heat or cut back the heat produced by the manifolds.
If you're jetted a bit lean and your timing is retarded you'll have excessive heat in your exhaust. |

Re: SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
I think your looking for the stock style shields, small zinc plated tin shields that bolt to the block. GM used them on most cars and trucks of the era. They are a must to "help" protect the boots fron the heat of the cast manifolds. I know GMCPauls, Classic Heartbeat, Classic Industeries, ZIP Corvette, Paragon, etal carry them. If you have trouble finding them I'll look up and post the correct ones later today.

A properly routed set of wires with silicone boots won't melt unless you are putting off a ton of heat. The shields can be more trouble than they're worth.

geezer, I'm Fuel injected.
Lee, that sounds like what I had found for "newer" models. But didnt list it for 62-65 vettes. If they are all kinda universal or can be easly modded to work, then I will get some. Octane, I agree. Thats why I didnt put them on at first. Jimbo, will send pm. |

There's nothing too special about them. They're designed to fit any SBC under the manifold, so pretty much any set should work. |

Re: SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
Lots of options on eBay. Good quality sleeves work pretty well.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/items/?_nkw=spark+plug+shield Since I am a LT1 guy, I use the LT1 style heat shields on all SBC engines, LT1 or not. http://www.ebay.com/itm/370423800370 I run ramhorns on a 383 -- towing heavy loads. Using a good set of MSD wires routed under the manifold (stock style), the boots haven't melted yet. The LT1 heat shields won't fit the MSD wires due to how huge the boot is. As mentioned, be sure to check your timing -- if retarded, will produce excessive heat. Same goes with running lean, I've have to upgrade jets on Holley carbs and metering rods on Eddy carbs to properly solve these types of problems in the past.

Try the Accel Ceramic wire boots. I run them on my Vortec 454. They are awesome.

Re: SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
truckster, thanks I was hoping to hear they were quite universal
storm, I was debating on the fabric covers, Ive actually used 2 of them to protect my starter wire on my Camaro. The LT1 covers wont work since I am running strait boot, but I had never seen them before. Interesting. Domer, I refuse to use anything with the word accel on it, to many bad experiences before. |

Re: SP heat shield for vette ram horns?
Oh OK. Straight boots might be part of your problem. I recommend angle boots with ramhorns. There are lots of wire kits that come with high-temp silicone angle boots. A high quality Corvette set for under-manifold routing should have silicone angle boots and seems to be the way to go. Something to consider if you keep having problems.
