Maybe I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew

Hey guy how you doin' it's Dave down here in Yuma. Though I better introduce myself so I can start posting and asking questions from the knowledgeable base.I picked up a '66 short step 6 cyl about a year ago at a garage sale. Not garage sale price however. Long story short it had been sitting since 1981. Here's what it looked like when I got it.

Welcome! What are your plans for the truck? Restoration, patina?

I should have titled this thread "Mission Creep". What started off as a "make run" has escalated a bit. But my vision is to get it running, which it does now, leave the patina as is, make it safe to drive and then give it to my grandson. He's only 10 so I will have some time before he can use it.

Yup for another couple months then I'll go back to Bellingham. The truck is in Algodones right now getting some patch panels welded in.

Ahhhh. Snowbird. Algodones is literally 5 miles from my house. Welcome.

Re: Maybe I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew

Congrats!!!
Glad you are able to get some of the important work started!!!
Concerning the patina. If you don't paint it...I've seen a few vehicles like yours where they have sprayed clear over the rust...I don't favor doing that. I would use a CLR bath, then scotchbrite, THEN some kind of wax to preserve the metal...looks best to me...just my thoughts...

As a child we had a similar pickup, bought it from my grandpa before he passed away, ours may have been older. It was white. served it's purpose for us for a while. Brings a good memory to me!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!

Re: Maybe I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew

Thanks for the thoughts on the patina. I want to preserve the look as best I can. I've seen some with a gloss clear which I do not like, looks totally unnatural to me. I think I'm going to try a small area with a matte clear and see if I like it. Oh it needs new bed wood too! Duh. Everyone loves pictures right?
