Picked up a trailer today. It's a 40' 1957 ABC. Their version of the Long, Long trailer. These pics aren't very good due to the fact my tablet won't focus well without full daylight. It really wasn't that dark when I snapped this at dusk.

yes, that's my C-20 Camper Special. Just installed a new camshaft and lifters and the old man is a whole new truck! A new brake booster as well. Need to rebuild all the wheel cylinders next.








The current plan is to use this coach as a workshop and storage till I get my '51 Spartan on the road. Then it will become my residence at Fawn Lodge.

Here ya go Clyde. One year ago I brought this poor old lady home. She now has a full compliment of cabinets and I'm even thinking about adding one for extra pantry (can't have too much pantry, you know. This year has been spent digging up all the missing bits and pieces and getting all the miscellaneous appliances, fans, et al repaired and replaced.

Thanks, but you haven't seen the other side with the gaping hole instead of a main door! I bought a much larger version of the same trailer mainly for the door! The fellow I room with is about to kill me on sight! He doesn't have that much room to talk though as he collects land rovers. Ollllld land rovers!

Anyway, I have a late eighties motorhome that I am seriously considering modifying to carry part of that old trailer. Might be fun to see what can be done with it.

Well, I took The ABC up to Fawn Lodge today. The truck did a good job of handling the trailer on numerous up and down hill grades. Some of them were pretty steep and I kinda felt like Nicky Collini in the movie when he said, "well, we were moving. But I wasn't too sure if I was pulling it or it was pushing me!" On some of those downhill grades, the old trailer was definitely pushing! Still, the old truck handled the load with aplomb. There was a steep hill coming out of Old Shasta at about 8% and I was concerned about the rest of the traffic contending with my slowness. Not to worry, they were working on repairing the road and cleanup after the Carr Fire. So, the speed was limited to twenty miles an hour. The truck was very happy at that speed in second and chugged merrily up the hill. The opposite side has a steep downhill for about a half mile. Wheee!!! The Acid Test, as it were, was climbing out of Whiskeytown Recreational area to Buckhorn summit. It's a 7% grade for six miles. About the first third of the climb was controlled traffic and limited to twenty-five miles an hour. Which limited me to that all the way up. Not a problem, as I don't think the truck could have managed it any faster anyway. That and I was in no mood to push the old man. Didn't heat up at all, no pinging, oil pressure stable at forty pounds all the way up the hill. The trailer is now safely tucked in the Garden at Fawn Lodge and George is going to KILL me when he gets home!

At the gas station in Redding. Four people were taking pictures (not including myself) and got two more offers to buy. Too funny! One lady said that if I repainted it any colour but the turquoise that it would be an unforgivable sin!

Souvenir Rocks, canned goods, et al!

No, there wasn't anything in the coach but a Okeefe and Merritt stove. Largely no interior either. So really a big empty box weighing in around five thousand pounds or so. Yes, relying on solely on the truck's brakes was worrisome. However keeping one's speed down and moving over to let people pass whenever possible helped keep things from being very stressful. Actually, all said and done, it was a lot of fun.

Really nice trailer. Glad you made it without incedent. As a long haul driver , I have to contend with heavy loads and hills everyday. Thank God nobody brake checked you. Have that happen often. It always makes me question peoples intelligence when they challenge 80,000lbs with their 3500lbs. Who do they think is going to win when the 80,000lb guy doesn't give a crap about their lives anymore.

There is a picture of a new Pickup that brakechecked a semi like that. He's rolled up like a jellyroll. Suicide by stupidity.

I was by no means trying to flame you about the trailer brakes, I was actually more curious than anything how those came when they were new. Surge brakes maybe? Or relying on the 4 drums on the 56 bel air pulling it?

As an aside, have you seen the show "Flipping RV's" or something similar about the younger couple in Oregon that restore the canned hams and older trailers like that for living?

Didn't think you were. Everyone is entitled to their opinion or feeling on something, no offense taken at all.

This trailer had electric brakes. Most travel trailers did after 1950. Mobiles did as well. Those that had brakes at all, that is. Trailer brakes were mostly only on the higher-end trailers till the sixties. Even then some of the littler trailers still didn't have them. Having had to remove one of the drums to replace studs, I found the brakes to be in excellent condition. Were I able to wire them up, it wouldn't surprise me if they work perfectly.

I figured everything from the late 60's or early 70's on had electric brakes, if any, but wasn't sure about the older stuff. Cool, thank you.

Iirc, anything 3000# and above had to have electric brakes but depends on where

I remember in the seventies that most single-axle trailers didn't have brakes. There were still a lot of people that thought only a double-axle needed them. There were even Horse trailers without brakes. It hasn't been till the last twenty or so years that any kind of brakes was required on "light" trailers. In California anyway.
