soft brake peddle

hey guys i just got my 15 year old an extended cab v6 1996. just the right engine for the boy. any ways i wanted to ask you all if there is a reason the break peddle seems to be mushy. it's got around 3" of travel before to begins to stop. 4 " and your stopped.... i heard the flex lines might cause this. i was thinking of swapping all flex lines and a new master cylinder. any advise would be appreciated...
thanks
GT

Re: soft brake peddle

calipers, wheel cylinders, rear need adjusted, flex lines, even the dump/isolation valve for the abs system can cause issues.

The mc as well.

Re: soft brake peddle

The rubber lines can stretch as they age causing a spongey pedal feel. Also, these trucks have never been known for super good pedal feel.

Re: soft brake peddle

i have sorta the same thing. but with a twist. my peddal seems soft in 2wd but when in 4wd seems to firm up some. it was supposed to have ABS but it doesnt work aparently... when in 2wd it seems to lock up easily though and just slide. mabey similar problems?

Re: soft brake peddle

parts are farily cheap, or maybe hit rockauto's site for better deals, I would do lines, claipers, wheel cylinders, pads, shoes, and hardware kit. Then maybe look into the dump valve for the abs or RWAL system.

Make sure the rear shoes are adjusted properly against the drum.

drums are adjusted right. and pads and shoes are new. disks look new. probably just replace the whole system.

Re: soft brake peddle

Good luck. I've replace almost everything and it still doesn't feel great. Will stop though. Guess that's what counts.

Re: soft brake peddle

I hear ppl over and over on other forums with these trucks especially the oldest of the body style 88,89, etc. and alot of times they too replaced everything only to find out the EH, isolation/dump valve for the RWAl system bad.

http://www.aa1car.com/library/abs_kelseyhayes_rwal.htm

also check out the last page or two or my thread on removing it,
