I've officially joined the '67-'72 crowd
I hauled this one over 1,000 miles home last month. The truck is a '71 C20 with the factory 350 and 4-speed. My grandfather special ordered the truck and took delivery in June of 1971. He bought it from a dealership in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, about 30 miles from the family farm. In the truck's entire life, it never went farther than maybe 40-50 miles from the farm. It has 57,900 miles on the odometer. Those are original miles. It hasn't rolled over. The tires on the truck, dry rotted and barely holding air, are only the second set of tires the truck has ever had.
My grandfather passed away a couple years ago. My dad and I were finally able to get up there this year and bring it home. The truck hadn't been started in over 3 years. We put in a new battery and a little gas, cleaned up the cap & rotor and got it running. It has a few rust issues that will need to be addressed. A new floorboard will be the biggest issue since there are 2 fist-sized holes in the rear corners. My cousin got drunk and hit a guardrail, which messed up the hood, grille and bumper. It had a spare tire on it, that's what that bracket is up front, and that probably kept the damage from being too much worse. The plans for the truck are mostly restoration. As long as my dad is around, he gets final approval of anything done to it. Even though this is a father-son truck, it's still technically his. Being in Texas, we both agree it needs A/C. Beyond that, all I want to do to the truck as far as mods are concerned is a mild drop and some wheels, both things that would be easily reversible. Here are pics I took after I got it home. I unloaded it from the trailer and took a short drive around the neighborhood and snapped a few pics of it still in its farm fresh condition.

That truck looks very solid considering where it's spent it's life. I live 35 miles south of Ft. Wayne & I never see a 67-72 truck that looks that good. Great story- glad to hear you're saving it!

4 speed manual and bench seat? ME LIKE.
Great story. I also got my truck from the original owner, my dad. My dad did all work to the truck and never replaced any of the brake parts. I was the first to do that but I saved all the originals. |

Great truck. Sad to see it leave Ind. Too few left in good shape up here. 30 mi. south of Fort Wayne.
Great history. I have my dad's '71 that he bought used in '74 that I hope to get drivable sometime.

What a great truck. Plain and simple example of a work horse C/20 that could still do what it did when new. Who says working these beats the heck out of them. People do! Treat 'em right and they'll treat you better!

Love it! I've got a 70 Long bed with a 350 and a 4 speed. I personally prefer long beds.. With the long bed I have more room too haul fire wood and I can fit full sheets of plywood inside the bed. When I was looking it seemed there are a lot more automatic trucks than 4 speeds....

Only the second set of tires the truck has ever had? That's awesome/incredible/classic!!
What you have there is a genuine family heirloom. Sounds like you'll be treating her as such. Congratulations! Should be a lot of fun for you and your Dad.

I just told my wife about you coming up to Indiana & dragging a truck down to Texas- she laughed out loud. My sister-in-law lives south of Fort Worth & if I'm counting correctly I've relocated 9 trucks from Texas to Indiana over the past 20 years. They seem to have a little less rust!
