winch hookup
I'm installing a new winch and have a battery that has both top and side posts. Could I wire the winch to the side posts and run the rest of the electrical on the top posts. Seems logical but never seen or heard of it done. Is there a reason not to do it? Thanks

Type of battery makes a difference. On most dual terminal batteries, the top posts hook directly into the plates. When they convert it to the side terminals with a top post most of the time they have a small strip of lead that feeds the side. Pulling continuous amperage can and has melted the strip in between the 2 posts. Put the high amp draw (which will be the winch) on the top posts and the truck on the side posts.
Of course the ideal thing would be a secondary battery for the winch with a split charger or a continuous duty, high amp relay |

If you plan on using the winch a lot i would look in to a dual battery set up.And what year is your truck?If its a 73-87 wrangler power products makes a dual battery kit with a 2nd tray and wiring.

No the winch isn't going to get alot of 4wd use. It's for mostly pulling whitewater rafts and driftboats up out of the river where there is no boat ramp. The truck is a 57 chev 4x4.

The side post would work fine for the light duty winching you will be doing, your truck looks beautiful.

I have my winch on my Duramax truck wired up to the sideposts. Just because it was a lot easier that way. I already have a remote jumpstart on the front that came with special battery screws for the side terminals that have an extra screw for clamping down the add on cables.
But like you, I'm not doing 500 yard pulls of 10,000 lbs so it has worked well for me. On my rear winch cable I did use the top posts, because once again, that was the easier way to do it. The rear has a 90 amp circuit breaker on it for the 5000# winch on my trailer.
