Speedometer gear problem...too small, or installed wrong? (700R4)

Well, I went to the dealer last week to pick up a new speedometer gear to correct my speedometer reading since I have different tires than when the trans was installed. 700R4.

It had a 41 tooth gear (I'm assuming, it says 41 T on the back of it), and I got a gear for 235 tires, 16 inch rims for 3.73 gears. I have 245's, but close enough I figure. It says on the back 35 T, which, again, I'm assuming is 35 teeth.

Got the new gear, and it was slightly smaller. To be expected, right? Less teeth, less diameter...I didn't think about it much, I just wanted it to work. Who doesn't?

Anyway, I installed the gear a couple days ago, and just took a trip to get grain and found it doesn't work. Big surprise...not. So, is there a trick to make the installation proper, or is it just too small? Now what?

I assumed you just put it in, made sure the cable was in the back of the gear and voila.

I suppose I'll have to take the damn thing out again, grab the old gear and go to the parts store and see if I can resolve it. It was a gear for a 700R4, why shouldn't it work? Blug.

I'm asuming by "doesn't work" that means not spinning so speedometer guage isn't working.
There are two different speedo gear housings for the 700. One is for a higher tooth count and the other is for a lower tooth count. My guess is that they move the driven teeth closer or farther away from the drive gear teeth. I can't remember what the cut off tooth count between the two are I think it's 39 but the housing I've seen have the tooth count numbers on them. In other words on one housing it says 31,32,33,34. And on the other one it says 40,41,42,43,etc. Mabe you need the other one. Your trans shop or dealer might help on this one. The speedo gear itself will fit in either one but will only work in the one it's ment to be in. Hope this makes sense and helps.

Use this calculator to find a better gear ratio. Sometimes it's better to change the drive and driven gears at the same time.
Search for a combo that is closest to a whole number.

Thanks guys. The housing size is what the problem is, since I didn't feel the gear touch anything when I put it back in (wishful thinking). So, off to find a new housing...oiii.

When I pick up some oil at the parts store, I'm gonna see if they can get their hands on it...which I doubt. Probably juts have to resort to online.
