1950 Column Shift Linkage to 4L60E (with under floor booster)

I have a 1950 that I am trying to use a Column Shift Linkage to a 4L60E on a truck with the under floor booster.

Has anyone here successfully made this work? I have tried several attempts at building a linkage and it seems when I solve one thing something else gets in the way, mostly the under floor brake peddle.

How have any of you solved this? Any pictures of what you did would be helpful.

I am guessing there mist be a different lever on the transmission side.

This is my latest attempt before giving up for the night

Have you looked at ididit column cable shift? It is compatible with 4L60E transmission.

Thanks, I had not seen that. I do not have much column showing outside of the firewall so I may have to fab up a bracket for the column end but I think that may be what I have to go with.

Just ordered one from Speedway

Re: 1950 Column Shift Linkage to 4L60E (with under floor booster)

I'm building a 55 with column shifter and a 4l60e. These transmissions are all cable operated. I grabbed a couple of cables from different 4l60 vehicles including the mounting brackets and made mine work. I used the cable from an s10 that is also column shifted. I had to fabricate the brackets but it seems like it is going to work out. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of it to share.

i think the long bolt on the trans arm is going to be a headache for you
have you tried running a straight rod from each arm?

The long bolt was mock up to see if it would work, not so good I just ordered the cable kit.

Re: 1950 Column Shift Linkage to 4L60E (with under floor booster)

I have installed in my 1948 Chevy 3100 a 5.3 with 4L60 E transmission. I am using a 1970s a Chevy van tilt steering column with column shift. Under floor dual chamber non power master cylinder. I hooked my transmission shift lever to the steering column shift lever with 3/8 rod. I threaded each end of the rod for heim joints. Put both shift levers in park, cut the rod to that length allowing for the heim joints. Bend rod to fit. It will take several attempts to get it right. I used the Kugal shift arm on the transmission, it has infinite adjustability for the right position.

Re: 1950 Column Shift Linkage to 4L60E (with under floor booster)

Thanks for all of the ideas, I ended up going with the IDIDIT cable set up but it required a bit of fabrication to make it work in my application. The first part of my walk around video shows what I had to do to make it work with my Speedway Motors column.

Good, looks like you were able to make that work out.

Have you test fitted your left header yet? I needed 3 joints to get linkage to clear and I see you got a direct shot to the steering box. The ididit shift cable is pretty slick you might want to install the header, then steering linkage then shifter.

I still have not decided on headers or Corvette manifolds so no test fit yet. I may have to add a 3rd joint and have all of the parts but am holding out until I figure out what I am using.

I have two friends that just got block hugger center and rear drop headers, hoping they will loan them to me to see if they fit.

this might be late and for that I am sorry but the 91 s10 donor I am using on my 41 has a clever column shift bracket that gets out of the way of things.

Re: 1950 Column Shift Linkage to 4L60E (with under floor booster)

ahh, you beat me to it again joedoh. that is what I thought of when I seen the predicament.that or the cable shifted 4l60e trans stuff. the trans brackets would all be available at a wrecker, as well as the cable. couyld also measure the standout distance from the column centre line. too late, he' got it figured. looks good too.
curt tn, is it just the video or does the cable have to bend at bit right where it comes out of the sheath? probably the camera angle. maybe some slotted holes in the bracket would help for line up purposes?

It has a slight bend in it but strangely enough the bracket they gave me for the trans side has even more of a bend in it. It seems to be minor enough that it does not seem to impact the ease of shifting.

OK, you all had me wondering so I went down to the shop and installed a set of old manifolds I had from an old Firebird. The passenger would work but the drivers is not quite a rear dump so I have an issue but it is so close.

If I could find something tight with a rear dump I think I could clear the steering without adding 3rd joint. These look to be steel so I might be able to do some modifications to the drivers side also.

When I bought the project the last owner has a 350 with these headers mocked up and they cleared a single steering shaft.

In late but for my th350 and column shift I used B&M racing cable and bracket, cost about half of the Ididit and similar units.
