Starts and dies
I have a 1999 Suburban which is same as 1988 thru 1998 truck. When you go to start it will fire and then within a second or two dies. If I wait 10 to 15 minutes it will usually start right up. I have had this problem since it was new in 1999 but used to be very seldom. I had it to stealership numerous time when under warrenty and they could find nothing wrong. It throws no codes and runs fine when running. The problem has become increasingly worst in last month. I have been told by one person it is a security control module. Any help would sure be welcomed.

Re: Starts and dies
When it starts and dies the light stays on but when it starts and runs the light goes off, right?

Re: Starts and dies
Correct. I believe it is the security module or passlock that is gone bad.

Re: Starts and dies
Yes, probably need the module. Everything on mine was changed with new before I got it, except for the module. Last I looked it was discontinued. Someone rebuilds them, or try a junkyard one. I didn't have any luck with the junkyard ones though. I defeated the security system my own way.

Don't miss the forest thru the trees
First right from the shop manual it says:
Faulty connections or wiring cause most problems. Damage to the passlock module itself is rarely the cause of the problem. A fix can be, put the key in and turn the ignition to the Accessory position for 10-15 minutes once the security light turns off. Try to crank it. There is always this https://newrockies.com/passlock-bypass-2/ |

Re: Starts and dies
I think your shop manual is wrong.
It would be cheaper to have the computer reburned without the security, and while you're at it you could even give it a tune.
