12 bolt question
Hey guys,
I picked up a 12 bolt out of a 1970 Chevelle and am in the process of removing the Chevelle mounts and adding the truck mounts. During the process I pulled the axles and one has a really odd grove in it. Is this normal? or did I get some junk axles? Thanks!

Re: 12 bolt question
that is NOT good at all .
time for a pair of shafts and possible redo of the axle . i would inspect all the bearings and super clean of the inside of that housing . and why a 12 bolt from a car ? ? ?

It's odd because it doesn't look like wear... it looks machined. I'm not too hurt about it as I have to buy new axles anyway so I can stick with the 6 lug setup. It has a open diff with 2.78 gears so all that has to go as well, I just didn't know if it was supposed to be like that. I got a good deal on it, and the car units have a beefier pinion, and generally more parts available. It's not a huge deal the overall length is 1" shorter than the truck setup, but with the disc brakes it will even out to be the same as the factory drums. I'll hit it with a scotch brite tomorrow and see if I can spot any scaring.

Re: 12 bolt question
No, that is not machined that way. It is simply excessive wear from the axle/wheel bearing. FYI, you can run the passenger 12 bolt gears in a truck 12 bolt housing with the correct bearing.

Re: 12 bolt question
When you get done all the welding and cutting make sure the housing is still straight. If the ends pull around with the welding and many do bearing life can be cut way short. Unless you plan to put massive HP the truck 12 bolt is fine. And if you need more rear for that much power its time for a 9".
