Rookie Frame Off Mistake- Body shims

I am sure I am not the first to fail to note position of body mount shims and now am paying the price!1972 GMC Suburban cowl and door alignment problems. The front cowl doesn't fit correctly (see photos). Is there a measurement that can be done to the body or body to frame (parallelism) or is it all trial and error. How much of the front clip needs to be loosened?
At least its running ! Thanks for your help (as usual ! )

Wow the paint looks great! I always though it was trial and error. I'm going to be in the same boat here since I didn't write down shim location and my truck is a mishmash of several different trucks.

X2, paint looks great. I hope some one will chimes in with some advise on leveling the body. A lot of variables in 40 + yrs, what kind of bushings did you use, any previous damage to the body or frame. If your left side looks decent start measuring floor to cab mount that the bushing sits on. Compare both sides.... Get some blue tape on the edges of your paint before you do anything. Right side does look low to me, at the door. Good luck

Re: Rookie Frame Off Mistake- Body shims

I don't think recording the locations matters too much.

I did make note of all the shims and locations when I had the body off the frame of my Chevelle - and none of them went back in the original locations.

I hard to start over - trial and error.

Thanks for the speedy responces and compliments on paint. I will keep you updated on my progress. It is still cold up here in Canada and garage is not heated. The paint was done by our local bodyshop and it really pops !
