Towing Help Please.

Hi guys,
Usually over at the 73-87 but I had a question about an 05 GMC Sierra. My dad has the truck and is going to try to tow a trailer with a bumper mounted hitch similar to this (http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...ver-67158.html) might actually be that. Anyway, on the bottom of his step bumper are two nuts welded to the bumper to mount this to. What size bolts are these? What grade bolts should we use, I'm assuming grade 8 or higher.

Thanks!

Re: Towing Help Please.

I have no idea what size bolts are required for it. 3/4 to 1 inch maybe, standard thread? Once you get the part take it with you to a parts store and they can fix you right up if it doesn't come with mounting bolts.
Is your dad dead set on buying this? I put one on a truck of mine and while it is handy for a receiver type hitch it doesn't make your bumper any stronger. I found having this setup places the ball away from the center of the bumper where it is stronger and tends to bend the bumper down due to the weight being levered against it. I pulled much less than 5000# with mine. I wished I had gone with the frame mounted receiver hitch setup. It is much stronger than the bumper mounted receiver.
Just an fyi from someone who's been there.

Re: Towing Help Please.

Just got back today and saw this. Ended up getting that cause we needed it quick. Bolts didnt line up with bumper but ended up using 4 grade 8 14mm bolts and attached to the slots on the bottom of the bumper. Neither of us like the set up but it worked for a flatbed hauling a golf cart. Bumper didnt look bent but if we do anymore hauling we will get a frame attached hitch.
