Does anyone know what tranny is a direct replacement

I have a 1965 c10 4 on the floor and am wanting a better driver
Quality 4 speed trans that would be a bolt in... i can do most work
Myself but not into having to do real fab work but want something
That is a better driver... no granny gear and syncros

If you don't abuse it, a T5 is a very nice swap. Some T5s do have a deep 1st gear, but less than half a granny. The overdrive is worth the work. I basically used 2nd-5th and it was a great driver.

Just what do you mean by a 'better driver"? Does your truck currently have the SM420? If you want lower rpm's on the highway, no 4 speed is going to accomplish that. You will need a 3 speed with OD, a 5 or 6 speed.

I love the 4 speed (SM420) most of the time...

1st is useless unless you are trying to pull a house, and I don't like how big the jump is between 2nd and 3rd....

There are a few 4 speeds that will bolt up, but there are hidden costs and slight modifications involved. The Saginaw 4 speed is good for mild to moderate use. The Borg Warner (now Richomd) Super t10 is being remanufactured and will hold up better than the Saginaw, and like the t10, The Muncie, which is very strong, is also being reproduced. All of these trannys require a shifter such as a Hurst. For ideal results the rear axle and tire size are important considerations because all 3 of the trannys I named are available in various gear ratios. Numerically higher rear ends use a tranny with a numerically lower first gear. Trannys with a numerically lower first gear have a tighter gear spread. As the rear end becomes more highway oriented (numerically lower) the gear spread needs to be wider because you need to start lower and space the steps out to overcome the tall rear gear. I bought a Muncie from https://5speeds.com/ they have a lot of good info on their website. It wasn't exactly cheap, (about the same price as my motor) but it's exactly what I wanted.

Mother of God. I just looked up those prices, the last time I purchased a T10 from a wrecking yard near San Diego it was $90. Times have sure changed. :O
