Tilt steering column VS my stock one Help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have this tilt column I bought from a friend, looking for some help to see if there are parts missing. My stock one that is non tilit has the stops for park ect.
Is this a aftermarket or a different year?
Any advise or experience would be much appreciated

Nothing missing, that new tilt looks ready to bolt in.

What keeps you from shifting from reverse into drive?
That is the part that is confusing to me.
My stock one has the little tit that falls into the bracket
on the end of the column.
It also keeps it in locked in park after shifting into park.
You have to pull the shift lever towards you to shift out of park
and from reverse into drive.

Your new tilt column relies on the transmission detent to pop into and hold in a certain gear.

Why these old stockers had those slots to lock into was probably more of a safety feature, you had to actually pull the shifter toward you to go from say N to R, D to R etc.

Could have been an idiot or a child proof effort...…. or both.

You have my interest. Ive never seen that lockout piece on 67-72 trucks.

The non tilt column has the detent at the bottom of the column as shown in the 1st picture and the automatic tilt column has the detent at the top inside the column at the shift lever, hope this helps, Les

This truck I am working on is a 1970 C-20 custom it has been all stock.
A real joy to work on, I thought they all came that way?

My 72 non tilt is like the first picture. Took a lot of adjustments to get the indicator to line up. Mines a 20 also

My dad's 56 Bel Air non tilt auto looks just like the first one also. I've never looked at a truck auto to tell. They look the same though!

question for you. Have you had trouble with you column in the truck not wanting to come out of park? My dad has been complaining about the 56 not wanting to come out of park and feels like it's going to break something. The only thing I can figure to do is bend those tabs back a little to make it easier to get out of Park. I've greased the tits up and that helped a little but man that thing is hard.

Mine was pretty smooth coming out of park,
I have to pull the shift lever towards me to disengage from park.
Same thing from reverse to drive.

Thanks Les, I was also concerned something was missing. Good to know the difference.

Btw, I almost bought a tilt at the local swap meet for $125 but the lower shaft was about 10" long instead of 3". Guy said it was out of a hot rod so no idea where it came from. The shifter lever seemed smaller too.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
