Recall Notice Rant

I just got a recall notice on my Ranger. Something about the airbags. And Ford would fix it free. Only problem is that the closest dealer to me is over an hour away. Then I have to sit around while they fix it, which could take god knows how long. It might be all day. Then spend another hour driving back. No thank you.

But they did offer a mobile repair service. Bingo! Except when I called they said that they don't service my area. but I could get a loaner car.

Great. A loaner. That means I have to drive my truck down the canyon. Drive the loaner back up. Drive the loaner back down and then drive my truck back up. Over 4 hours of driving.Again. No thank you.

So I asked Ford to just send me the parts and I'd have my local guy send them the paperwork that it had been completed. And I'd eat the cost of repairs.

No. They said it has to be done at the dealer.

So I said the heck with it. I'll just blow it off.

Now I find out that the is a law or a regulation or whatever, that you cannot register a vehicle under recall until the repairs are made. So I can't renew my tags. I've never heard of this before.

So just a heads up. Don't ignore those recall notices. (like I always did).

And this isn't just in California. It's Federal.

And just to add insult to injury we just got another one on my wife's car. And that dealer isn't any closer. Round two.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Can't renew a registration unless a recall repair is made? That's news to me. Since registration laws are all state laws, there's no way for the feds to enforce it. California does its own thing, but the law is different here. My son has received safety recall notices about a dozen times for his Grand Am for an ignition switch, which we replaced years ago before the recall came out. He just tosses them in the garbage and has no problem renewing his registration.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Paul, I'm in about the same boat as you. Nearest dealer is about an hour away and I have wasted entire days there before. This is the first I have heard about this recall / registration nonsense. We have an outstanding recall for broken rear leaf springs on our 2005 Tacoma. Our springs look good and I have ignored the recall notices for years. So far, DMV has taken my payment and mailed me the tags. Guess I'll continue to march and see what happens.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Yeah, the big "he who shall not be named" bailout closed down the last new car dealer in our county

We had that ignition switch recall on our car. It took two or three years before it finally got done. First, they didn't have the parts. Next, they wanted us to make an appointment six months in advance in the middle of the winter with a car that can't get around in the snow. We are 60+ miles from the city and sometimes have two feet of snow in winter, and then rain and mud till the end of June.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

I saw something about this on the news. I wasn't really paying attention. But if my I remember correctly the federal government has mandated that vehicles under recall can't be registered until repairs are completed.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Get a hold of corporate and tell them to come get their truck and either fix it or bring you a new one. You paid for a fully functional and safe truck, now they are saying you didn't get what you paid for and want you to go out of your way to fix it? Fat chance !!!

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Wait a minute. It's an airbag problem? And they want you to risk your life driving it to the dealer?! BS!!! Send a damned tow truck and deliver it back when fixed

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Chrysler Corp. called the office about a recall on a 2007 Ram dually we have. They sent a couple letters, then started calling. We ignored it. The other day a lady called and my son in law told her "Ma'am this truck has been getting the hell beaten out of it by a pipeline crew for the last 12 years, I'm not worried about it."

She told him that didn't make any difference, she wasn't giving up until the truck was through the shop. I don't think she said anything about registration.

We sucked it up and drove the truck all the way to the dealer...……….across the street.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

Must be a California thing, as there is no registration issue down here with re registering one with a recall on it.

Re: Recall Notice Rant

I would call them and say I have not used the truck since the recall because of the recall I have a fear in driving the truck , but if you send a tech out to my home and disable the air bag system I then will make the lonng trip to the dealer.

My Tacoma has three outstanding recalls that I have not had completed and haven't had any issues getting it registered. I'm not arguing BTW, just saying I haven't been called to task on them.
