random stall again

78 2 wheel 350/350 stock with edelbrock 1406. Pretty much new engine etc. Small town so just average speeds. It seems to stal randomly at weather conditions. Was fine most of the summer exect a real hot day with rain the day before. It ran fine yesterday and rained all night and this morning it stalled about 5 times and then worked fine. It stalls but fires up first crank . Fuel filters full when running,no fuel pump leaks [mech pump] . My thoughts are float level, coil, module,HEI. I,m at a loss. It shuts off like a light switch,no sputter or nothing but fires up first crank . I posted on this before but don,t how to include other thread

Re: random stall again

Since you mentioned that it shuts off like a switch, my first thought was and electrical issue. Distributor problem would be the first thing to check. My old 69 with the same setup had an HEI that would do the same thing. Unfortunately, I had an extra HEI and just swapped it out rather than try to determine what was causing the problem.

One other thing to consider is a problem with the ignition switch itself. I've heard of internal short and even a loose 12vdc cable connector.

Re: random stall again

It sounds like it is stalling on start up now that the weather is getting colder. That would be choke adjustment. My car with an Eddy carb just started doing that this past week. I'm positive my choke needs an adjustment.

Re: random stall again

I wiggled wires, wire to dist etc.to try and make it stall but nothing. It did this a couple years ago when was 100 degrees out and again this summer when it was real hot outside, engine temp was right where it should be.The weather is doing something to it

FWIW that is exactly where I would start. Gas problems don't typically just stop, there is a little sputter or rough running. Sudden death like you turned off the switch really makes me lean toward ignition issues.

The fact that is seems worse in wet weather implies moisture is causing something to short to ground. I would start looking at the distributor coil and ignition module. Could be any of several things but that is a good place to start.

Re: random stall again

In this thread you are talking about a 1980 ?

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=788904

This thread talks about HEI:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=788438

This thread talks about a 1984 temp sender ?http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=733082

In the above threads speaks to the weather as well....interesting. Humidity ?

Re: random stall again

Sounds like electrical problem.
Have you popped the dizzy cap off to check for any signs of moisture or ionization?

Re: random stall again

What did you do to fix your Dads old 318 dodge truck, it would stall when it was moist or foggy in the morning Your chevy truck is doing the same thing, does Mom's car stall too ? maybe the same fix for all three.... Move to drier climate.

Re: random stall again

Sounds to me like you may need a new distributor cap and a set of wires.

Didn,t do anything for the 318,just let it warm up longer . I always wait for my truck to warm up for awhile .

Re: random stall again

I think I got it figured out. Rained for 2 days and is sunny and real muggy so I took it out for a ride. It did 1 stall . I finally got to see it stall with the hood open ,I,ve tried but would,t stall when I was watching it. I have 2 clear fuel filters one before pump and one to the carb. So when it stalled the filter before the pump would be almost empty and the one at the carb was full but bottom filter would fill up again from the pressure of the fuel in the tank { I,m assuming } and start again,so the more fuel in the tank the better it ran. I guess is a slow dieing fuel pump. I will try the the fuel filter first which is new last year just to see what happens. Thanks for the help. I will post back later with the results .Hope I,m right

Re: random stall again

Could be a crack or leak in the line between the fuel pump and tank. Check or replace all rubber lines between the pump.and tank. They may look good but cracks might show up in the rubber if you bend them.

I had the same thing to happen on a 69 442 Olds. Idle fine and run fine, try to bring it off the line and it would go about 3 car links before it died.
