Re: Fixrupr

The last item that I need to do any welding on is the 68 hood Im using on this rebuild. I have already done most of the sanding and etch primed bare metal spots on. I will fill the hole where the hood lip trim and the where the letters go across the front of the hood. I will be using my mig welder and a cooper backing tool to do the plug welds. Then grind with flap wheel and small die grinder.

Re: Fixrupr

Working on all this body work to get ready for paint, makes me realize why the labor cost is so high if you take it to a shop. This truck is 100% home garage built.

Progress today, got the 68 hood letters welded shut and the trim holes. Added filler and ready for first coat of filler primer. Also welded the three trim holes on the front of the fenders and filler and etch primed.

Re: Fixrupr

Now on the list to get this truck ready for paint.

I need to do one more coat of filler primer and block sand the hood, front fenders, both doors, tail gate and grill. The cab needs one more coat of filler primer and block sanding, interior needs block sanding. Lots of sanding and lots of dust to go. Shooting for spraying the interior in one week along with inner doors, hinges.

Re: Fixrupr

Took the time to tear out all the door insides so i can clean them up and service them. While they are out I will 3m undercoat the inside of the doors. Had a hard time on both doors getting the screws out of the door strike tumbler assembly. After soaking with PB blaster and having no luck I finally took a bolt and welded it to the screw and was able to get them all out that way. All of the other screws came out with out any problems. Pictures to follow.

Re: Fixrupr

Picture from above was from my sons truck. He had a driver side rear wheel seal leaking. With a little guidance from "Craig" I was able to take the drum off and get a new seal installed. Had to completely remove all brake items and degrease. It looks as if the brakes were brand new...just covered with axle oil. Got everything all back together and working.

Well finally got the tilt column, driver door and tailgate shot in filler primer today. Will probably remove from wires and hang up other door and hinges for another round of primer this afternoon.

Re: Fixrupr

Did some shop cleaning today and built my second set of body panel stands. I had some left over 3/4" conduit and miscellaneous hardware. So I grabbed the tube bender and went to work on throwing another one together. Probably not the best in the world but its sturdy and I had the left over material.

Here is a shot of the next items up for second round of wet sanding and the hood getting the underside primed. With any luck I might be ready by the end of the week to start shooting color.

Re: Fixrupr

This morning I sandblasted a rally rim that I had and painted with Argent Silver wheel paint from Napa. I will put a clear coat on later in the afternoon to protect the finish.

Re: Fixrupr

Picked up another gallon of epoxy primer to get the rest of the parts in the loop for painting. More wet sanding to do on interior and doors....then i will be ready for sealer and paint.

Shot all primer with the Harbour Freight gun , worked well once you get the pressure at the cap around 45. Will shoot the base / clear with a sata and devilbliss gun. I have the disposable bag system on the devilbliss so it makes for quick cleanup as well as painting with the gun upside down, mostly for inside the cab.

Re: Fixrupr

Hey thanks for the props. Its been a fun long project. Mostly the body work I had to do to get it to acceptable standards.

So far here is a list of what i have done so far.

Removed entire front clip - replaced with a 68 entire front clip
On the 68 clip I welded in all the lettering holes, repair a small tear in the front drivers side fender, did some dolly and hammer work, filler work primer and under coating of the front fenders.

The cab -
No rust to repair! Cut out out filler patch for gas tank welded in and filler, welded in back of cab trim holes and filled, removed everything from the cab, including all interior items, doors, hinges etc.

Doors - removed all internal hardware and windows, did some dolly and hammer work, welded in mirror holes, welded in a rust patch at bottom of door, filler work.

Bed-
No rust repairs needed, cut out sheet metal to patch where the auxillasry tanks were, dolly and hammer work and filler.

Hood - was in excellent shape, welded in the letters and trim holes, minor filler work and the most time spent on the dip in the middle of the hood crease. Found the best way was to form a piece of hard oak that would fit the shape of the contour under the hood and start beating on it until it finally submitted.

I know there has been much more to than stated above, but at least it gives a good documentation of the basics so far. As of now just about every part on truck that is going to get paint has 2 coats of filler primer, I use the Napa crossfire cp440. Sand great and fills sanding scratches well. I am now working through the wet sanding process so I can get it ready for sealer and paint.
